Porsche Cayenne Tows an Airbus A380

Porsche Airbus A380

I know this sounds crazy but Porsche has finally made it. The ageing second generation Porsche Cayenne S Diesel and the Turbo S were given a massive test – towing an Airbus A380. The biggest passenger vehicle on the planet, which weighs more than 250-tonne (285-tonne)! You may remember something similar ten years ago when the Fifth Gear presenter, Tom Ford, decided to pull a Boeing 747 with a diesel VW Touareg V10. He made it but he cheated! The Boeing 747 had dummy engines and was probably lighter than a normal plane. In addition, that plane was parked on the Top Gear circuit for ages and wouldn’t have had any fuel or liquids. It was a dry 747 with fake engines.

However, Porsche did it properly! A plane that was ready to fly was towed by a Cayenne. This campaign was done to show the robustness and the power of the Cayenne. Towing a 285-tonne plane is not easy, and creates tremendous pressure on the torque converter, gearbox, drive train and the chassis (platform). And don’t forget, Cayenne doesn’t have a low range gearbox like the Touareg!

The first gear of the Cayenne is designed to act like a low-range gear. From this experience, we can see that it does work.

However, they should have done this test before to show that the Cayenne is still a powerful SUV for offroad work!
