BMW 7 Series Facelifted!

Today BMW revealed the facelifted 7 Series in China, featuring a really strong front end. The new 7 Series features the largest BMW kidney grille, inspired by BMW’s latest SUV: the X7. This design change signals that BMW is planning to differentiate between luxury models by using unique design language; in other words, through massive BMW kidney grills.

Other than that, you will not be able to see a major difference between the interior and the rear end of the 7 Series and previous models. However, there is bad news for the emerging markets: the 740e plug-in hybrid model with the 2.0-litre petrol engine is to be replaced by a 745e plug-in hybrid with a 3.0-litre petrol engine. It is likely that BMW is going to sell a version of the 745e with a 2.0-litre petrol engine to the emerging market; however, the rest of the world will face the new larger engine.

The new 7 Series offers an improved version of the existing Driving Assistance Plus; in addition, BMW has received permission to run fully autonomous cars in China. It must be noted that this will not make an impact on the 7 Series right now, but it is an important milestone.

The 7 Series still offers a level two semi-autonomous driving mode; this will be more than enough for stressful long journeys, as it is always useful to have a second eye while driving.

In other news, if you are planning to buy a Rolls-Royce Ghost, you will, in fact, be buying an outdated BMW 7 Series: the Ghost is based on the previous generation 7 Series and, in all honesty, the facelifted 7 Series offers a greater level of interior luxury.

Overall, the new 7 Series looks really exciting and will definitely challenge the ageing Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

BMW 7-Series is 40 Years Old

It has been 40 years since the first BMW 7-Series was revealed to the public. I would never have thought that the 7-Series is that old! Even so, I can clearly remember the last five generations. To be honest, you don’t miss a lot when it comes to the first few generations. The BMW 7-Series started to look good in the mid-1990s! In the 2000s, it looked like a spaceship.

Anyway, despite the 40 years of excitement, the 7-Series did not manage to witness the most important events of the world like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. To be fair, the S-Class is literally everywhere on this planet. Wherever you go, you will always find an S-Class.

Perhaps the brightness of the S-Class overshadowed the 7-Series. Actually, this is something quite normal. This segment was created by Mercedes-Benz and we expect to see a market dominated by the S-Class.

I can’t ignore the fact that the 7-Series brought dynamism into this market. The early versions of the S-Class are dull. They are just heavy and boring-looking objects. As the BMW transferred its sportive characteristics to the 7-Series, the market changed.

Unlike the S-Class, the 7-Series was, and always will be, more appealing to the younger audience, even though we have never seen a BMW M7 with a loud exhaust. BMW never went along this path of making the 7-Series a massive sport cars, unlike the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Even if you manage to find a 1998 7-Series with a good maintenance record, it will not look outdated, and that’s important!

In recent years, the 7-Series brought new technologies to the market including composite materials and serious weight reduction. Of course, we can’t ignore the fact that the Rolls-Royce Ghost, and the Wraith are based on the previous generations of the BMW 7-Series.

2017 BMW 725d

Yes, you read correctly. BMW is offering the new the 725d under the 7-Series in 2017! It is designed to be sold in emerging markets where the import duties and the road taxes are too high for the higher displacement engines. However, the BMW 725d doesn’t use a 2.5-lt diesel engine. It is powered by a 2-lt diesel engine. BMW just made a minor adjustment to the branding. Where did I see the BMW 725d? On BMW’s Turkish distributor’s website.

For many people, the BMW 725d will remind them of the early 1990s. There used to be 7-Series branded as a 725d, and I still can remember that car very clearly. When I saw the 725d on the price list, it took me back to the 1990s.

Anyway, it is basically the same car with impressive performance figures and a tiny engine. Is it worth buying? If you are facing heavy taxes on the cars where you live, the 725d will be perfect for you. You can spec up the car with the latest gadgets and the performance will never disappoint you.

BMW 725d is powered by a 2-lt diesel engine with 231HP power and 4,4-lt fuel consumption.

BMW 740e iPerformance

It is finally here. A plug-in BMW 7-Series, BMW 740e iPerformance. I know some of you are really excited and some of you would never think of owning one. If you live in London or live in a country with a very high tax bracket for larger engines, this car will be your favourite.

Unlike the Mercedes-Benz S500e, the BMW 740e iPerformance offers an all-wheel drive option! It is called the 740Le xDrive. Also, BMW is nearly 200-kg lighter! THAN WHAT? Regarding the all-wheel drive, the short-wheel base is stuck with a rear-wheel drive.

Let’s discuss the numbers. The rest of the car is like the normal BMW 7-Series. The 740e is powered by a 2-lt TwinTurbo petrol engine with 258HP and 400 nm (you can find the same engine inside a MINI Cooper S) and the electric motor generates 113 HP and 250 nm. The combination of these two engines generate 326 PS and 500 nm. The engines are coupled with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The 0-100 km/h acceleration is 5.4 sec (5.3 for the xDrive) and the top speed is limited to 250 km/h!

The range of electric drive is around 44 – 48 km (41 – 45 km xDrive). In terms of CO2 emissions, if you live in London you will love these values! 45-50 gr (49 – 56 gr for xDrive). Consumption is 2 – 2.2-lt (2.1 – 2.5-lt xDrive). These values are really impressive!

How long does the 740e need for charging? Only 4 hours with your house plug and 3 hours with the BMW iWall! The battery capacity is 9.2 kWh.

The rest of the 740e iPerformance is the same as the normal 7-Series. Is it worth buying? If you love V8 engines, you will never ever like this car. However, if you would like to enjoy the BMW 7-Series and don’t worry with the taxes, this is the perfect car for you.

To be honest, I would go for a 740Le xDrive iPerformance. It offers everything you need from semi-autonomous driving to high tech driving assistance systems to all-drive system and super exciting consumption figures. I know the 7-Series is a massive car, but it will be a great ride for long journeys.

BMW M760Li xDrive Not M7 Yet

A few hours ago, BMW announced the M760Li xDrive. For the first time, the 7-Series will be wearing a M-badge from the BMW M-Division. We have been waiting for this for a very long time and as the press document has just been released, I am sharing the technical details directly.

To wrap up; we all have been waiting for the BMW M7, instead we have the M760Li which is better than we were expecting. The vehicle offers 600 HP from a 6.6-lt V12 engine and develops 800Nm of torque at just 1500 rpm. This means, M760Li will accelerate like nothing else on this planet.

Here are the press release details:

“With the new BMW M760Li xDrive, the freshly launched new BMW 7 Series is gaining a prestigious flagship model. Headlined by its exceptional refinement and supreme power delivery at all times, the 12-cylinder petrol engine with M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology under the bonnet reinforces the new car’s range-topping status. The boldly dynamic driving characteristics of the BMW M760Li xDrive combine with superior ride comfort to make a compelling statement and set a new benchmark in the luxury sedan segment.

The new BMW M760Li xDrive gives a debut to the new M Performance TwinPower Turbo 12-cylinder petrol engine. Concealed under a cover bearing “M Performance” lettering, the 6.6-litre V12 develops output of 441 kW/600 hp* at 5,500 rpm* and peak torque of 800 Nm (590 lb-ft)* at 1,500 rpm* (fuel consumption combined: 12.6 l/100 km [22.4 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 294 g/km)**. The high-performance unit with leading-edge M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology accelerates the BMW M760Li xDrive from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds* on the way to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

If the optional M Driver’s Package is specified, the speed limiter doesn’t cut in until 305 km/h (189 mph). Power transfer is via the state-of-the-art eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission as standard. The M Performance-specific tuning of the shift programs, delivering sportier gear changes and more instantaneous downshifts throughout the rev range, has been specially adapted to the characteristics of the V12 engine. With its optimal internal efficiency and a gear-change strategy assisted by navigation data, the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission contributes to the authoritative driving experience and works seamlessly with the standard Auto Start Stop function.”

The New BMW 730i with a 2-lt Petrol Engine

The 2-lt petrol engine in a BMW 7-Series? It sounds a bit bizarre, but it is now on the market. BMW recently revealed the new 7-Series with many state-of-the-art technologies that will envy the top-spec Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

The innovations of the new 7-Series are not limited to technological features. Now, the 7-Series is available with a 2-lt petrol-powered turbo engine, called the 730i/730iL. You might be thinking that I am making a massive mistake and that I do not understand the fundamentals of the BMW, as 730i should mean that it is a 3-lt petrol engine.

However, the world has changed, and the BMW has changed as well. Nowadays, the badge at the rear of the car is only for branding and does not represent the true engine. BMW has been doing this for a very long time. The 328i is not a 2.8-lt, and the 340i is not a 4-lt.

The story is the same here, the 730i/730iL is targeted for markets where the taxation is very heavy on the larger engines, and people change their preferences or move to another brand like the 2-lt Jaguar XJ. In order to capture this market, BMW uses turbo technology to boost the tiny engines and offers the same performance of the 730i badge with a tax friendly engine. And it produces 258 HP!

Unfortunately, these types of engines are not available on the global market. Usually, they are available to unique markets. Generally, you can often spot different engine ranges in China.

Anyway, in case you are wondering, there is a new BMW 730i with a 2-lt petrol engine! The proof is here!

Facelifted New BMW 7-Series

Usually I don’t write about this type of topics but recently facelifted new BMW 7-Series was caught on a public road. It is rumoured that, new BMW 7-Series may feature leather covered engine bay, instead of plastic cover. I really wonder how BMW will manage to keep the leather free of dust and dirt.

The facelifted 7-Series looks really fresh and attractive. However, there are not reliable information regarding to technical details at the moment.

BMW Vision Future Luxury | The New BMW 7-Series

The new BMW 7-Series based on BMW Vision Future Luxury concept vehicle. BMW recently revealed the photos of their huge luxury concept vehicle and gave some hints for their future product strategy.

And I assume that, Future Luxury concept vehicle will be born as the new 7-Series. Because, 7-Series is the flagship of the BMW and it should provide the latest technology and comfort. Starting with laser light system that will replace the traditional headlight system, OLED interior lighting at the rear, more efficient (as usual), exclusive and elegant exterior design (concept car is hand-made), Rear Seat Touch Command Tablet that extends the ConnectedDrive concept into rear seats, more comprehensive head-up display system and new user interface for the iDrive or ConnectedDrive (It will take longer to change the climate controls heat setting).

My personal view? BMW Vision Future Luxury looks amazing! Attention to details, interior design, materials are exquisite. I think the upcoming 7-Series will be more competitive.

New Photos of Maserati Quattroporte

New Maserati Quattroporte, now it is stronger to compete with the Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7-Series, Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ. However, Quattroporte is a bit niche car when you compare with these vehicles. You cannot spot a Quattroporte very often, does not offer wide range of engines and still delivers the racing heritage.

Also, people who buy Quattroporte are different than the people who buy its competitors. Quattroporte is the Italian passion on wheels and it always does look cool.

Now, there are new photos of Maserati Quattroporte!

By the way, Quattroporte is powered by a 3-lt V6 engine with 410 HP and 550 Nm of torque. The engine is coupled with 8-speed automatic gearbox. Maserati only needs 5,1 seconds for rear-wheel to reach 100 km/h and 4,9 seconds for all-wheel drive to reach 100 km/h. Top speed is not limited; rear-wheel drive can achieve 285 km/h and all-wheel drive 283 km/h

By the way, new Maserati Quattroporte is available with all-wheel drive option for better traction.

Audi S8 US Commercial “Suspect”

Audi S8; if you are reading my blog for long time or know me personally you might have noticed that Audi is not my favourite brand. The only reason for this emotional disconnection is the Audi’s tendency to understeer even with four-wheel drive system Quattro, and most of the Audi’s are front-wheel drive.
In my opinion, if you are buying a premium car rear-wheel drive is a better option. Therefore, Audi is not in my favourite list. However; Audis are really well made, ride is very comfortable and offers sportive character and Audis look really good.
Recently, Audi developed a new technology called ActiveSport Differential. This technology enables to transfer power to each rear-wheel independently and reduce the tendency to understeer. Unfortunately, Active Sport Differential is optional but worth to buy.
I recently found this Audi S8 advertisement in Audi’s US YouTube channel. Scenario is really original and you feel the excitement of the S8! What is Audi S8? Audi S8 is the powerful and more sporty version of A8. Audi brands their performance models with S instead of A, BMW does with m and Mercedes does with AMG.
Audi S8 is powered by a 4-lt TFSI petrol engine with 520 PS of power and coupled with 8-speed automatic gearbox. Audi S8’s competitors; Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-Series do not offer this level of performance from 4-lt engine. Therefore, Audi deserve respect for its engineering achievement. Honestly, I may buy an Audi S8 ;)
