Mercedes AMG Shoes :((((

Santoni for AMG. This is a part of promotion of Mercedes SLS AMG. Not my favourite :( It did not manage to create the same pure sense of design, excellence of performance, distinctive soul of Mercedes Racing Heritage. It is just a engineering perfection with retro design and the same interior with Mercedes E Coupe. Same Interior! Buttons are the Same!
As I understood from the PR campaign, there are some bits of Porsche Design! SLS AMG is an iconic car, life style etc etc etc. Actually I don’t agree, it does not have a unique design! Similar to Porsche Design, they are now offering shoes from Italian shoe maker Santoni. Except one or two models which are very similar to Camper shoes, the rest of the collection is quite nice. There are some similarities with Hogan shoes but they are nice until the moment you see the AMG word.
I really like Mercedes but I do not find AMG cool! You cannot make a brand cool or exquisite or desirable in couple of months. You must invest invest invest! Actually AMG’s current position is doing really well. It is still a modification company. You did not reveal a design philosophy, I know with current managers AMG is in the excellence of its era. But you should wait more! Anything with Mercedes or AMG logo is not cool for life style, there is a long way to become Porsche Design!

Nowadays efficiency, better consumption, environmental driving are the main issues of automotive industry. And every new car is trying to minimize their consumption figures by lowering their resistance to air. Air and consumption! Let me define this very basic; if a car looks like a box without any softer edges, it will consume more fuel. Because, box designed car will have more resistance to air than softer one! Cars like Mercedes G Class, Land Rover Discovery are hopeless for efficiency. However this resistance has more impact on consumption after 120km/h.
As the speed increases, car’s resistance to air increases. Therefore, sexier looking car will less resistance to air than Mercedes G Class. Actually, anything different than G Class and Discovery has less resistance.
This new cw value, defines the resistance to air, is a very good marketing tool. And marketing departments are packing a very old stuff like a new stuff! The lowest cw, air resistance value production car is the Mercedes E Coupe. This new Mercedes with pre historic gearbox is offering cw value of 0,24. That’s the lowest one on market :) And you will be thinking; Mercedes engineer’s did this after very hard working etc etc etc. Actually, this number is not the lowest one. (Actually I really like the new E Coupe, I don’t care about it cw value, I would buy it!).
In 1934, Prague Auto Show hosted the Tatra 77. This was powered by 3,4lt V8 engine with an impressive air resistance of 0,212. cw value of 0,212 in 1934. And in 2010, the lowest one is 0,24.

How to run ESP?

ESP, DSC, VSC, MSP, CST; they all the do the same. Electronic stability control! These systems help to prevent unintended skids like under steer or overseer. This system has several G sensors and monitors the directions of vehicle, angle of steering wheel, traction levels and if car starts to go somewhere you are not suppose to go, system applied brakes to tyres to prevent any under or overseer.
This is the dictionary definition of this system. Why I am telling this? Nowadays you can find ESP on many cars and in following five years, it will be common like ABS! But most of us don’t know how to test the ESP ;) In 2001, when we have the Ford Mondeo with ESP; I had this problem. How this system starts working. And here is the solution.
If you are not living in a place where it snows all the time, you cannot the flashing light of ESP on your screen. ESP system starts to work immediately with erk test. This test became popular from Sweden, as they have many deers walking around; they created a way to test cars’ handling ability if they face with a deer. Sudden left turn then right turn then left turn. If you are driving a very tall car without the definition of handling, you can only achieve left turn then right turn and rollover. So, ESP works before you rollover. But never try to the limits of physics ;)
You can watch the video for details. And it was invented by Bosch and first used by Mercedes ;)

Greek Mercedes GL

Today I am in Greece. As we all read from the newspapers, Greece is suffering from economic crisis.
Interestingly, I saw the first Mercedes GL 500 in my life in Athens and ten minutes later, Bentley Continental GT. It was not GT Speed, sorry :( These two vehicles are designed to burn petrol without any hesitation :)
Driving a GL 500; that’s the easiest way to say “ohh there was an economic crisis around, I did not know that” :)

Today, Tomorrow, Emotions, Toyota

Empire of robustness started to fall into parts. Toyota constructed its brand identity based on high quality production techniques, problem free cars and reliability and ignoring status value, a design philosophy, increasing interior material quality. Until last couple of weeks, being problem free was enough to sell millions of cars every year. However, a tiny problem with gas pedal was adequate to prepare a huge domino effect on Toyota.
In any aspect of life, you need to divide your assets into different places to reduce the risks. They are doing this in stock exchange; investors buy different shares and in case of emergency their loss is minimized. If they invest everything on one paper, they might have huge return but any fluctuations will destroy everything.
Toyota did something similar to investing all your wealth into one share, and they avoided reducing the risk by separating them. When you think about Toyota, you will probably think about Japanese good prices, good quality and dull looking car. Toyota never focused on design, status icon, product image as much as they focused on problem free. What they have done is a very good thing but they should have focused on other aspects to strength their brand image.
Let’s think about Alfa Romeo and Mercedes. Alfa Rome has a very bad reputation for breaking down, nowadays break down issues reduced but that’s a part of Alfa Romeo. However, this does not prevent people to buy Alfa Romeo. I would definitely buy a MiTo instead of idiotic looking Toyota Yaris. MiTo has the passion, design and Italian style, with potential problems. But those other assets of Alfa Romeo’s brand image motivating people to purchase an Alfa Romeo and ignoring the failing fact! And people still buying Alfa Romeo and they could emerge emotional relationship with their car but with Toyota it is impossible. The only relationship which you can make is the green digital clock! Toyota ignored the emotional part of marketing!
Mercedes suffered a worse problem in 2004 with electronic braking system SBC. It was an innovative electronic braking pedal which works totally electronic. And it broke down! Suddenly, in some cars it did not wish to slow down the car. Mercedes faced huge profit loss and recalled many cars. But did this destroy Mercedes totally? Of course not, because Mercedes had other attributes associated to brand. Like; status value, smooth riding quality, high quality interior, eye catching design. All these assets helped Mercedes to recover more easily and people never forgot the SBC problem totally.
So, Toyota does not have any strong assets to sustain its brand image and recover easily. They could invest on advertisements and PR campaigns heavily to recover all these. But they should revise their policy about manufacturing cars! As I can see from their green digital clock, they treat car as a calculator and they ignore the fact that people might associate different attributes to a car and those attributes can save the brand in case of emergency.

New Range Rover, really better ?

For long years Range Rover was my favourite SUV. Timeless design, exquisite interior quality and off roading ability were the details which kept it top of my favourite list. However, one and half year ago I had chance to drive Range Rover Vogue TDV8 model and every good feeling of mine were collapsed. I was expecting a much better vehicle than this.
When I started driving it; steering wheel was not communicative and it was hard to feel the road, breaks were senseless pedal was not that effective, engine had a huge turbo lag as big as a black hole in space, traction control was letting too much wheel spin on corners in normal road condition and stability programme was struggling to control back of the car, V8 diesel was very heavy and car tend to dive from noise and a little bit heavy breaking exaggerate the situation more.
In a half an hour drive, my dreams were lost. And I started to think why this happened? May be I should compare with another SUV and think twice. I drove Mercedes ML 320 CDi and I drove in the same as I drove the Range Rover and surprisingly Mercedes did not behave like Range Rover. Ok, it was V6 diesel I should have driven V8 diesel but the rest was much better than Range Rover.
I shared my reviews about Range Rover with a Land Rover engineer and he did not reject any of those and told me to drive the new one. Unfortunately I did not have any chance to drive a Range Rover, especially in Turkey if you don’t have that amount of money, you should be lucky to drive one! However, I read something on Land Rover website;
“The new 2010 Range Rover is now equipped with a new braking system, comprehensively updated to provide enhanced stopping power and improved driver feel.”
So, it is obvious that even the Land Rover understood that breaks were not that good! And they introduced “Enhanced Understeer Control and Electronic Traction Control”. I guess, 2010 Range Rover is a far better car than the previous one. I will share my comments when I drove it ;)

Veyron Le Locomotive

When you buy a Bugatti Veyron, you will a big problem! You paid more than a million euro a car with thousand horses. But you still have a problem! You cannot use the full potential of your Veyron in open roads. Even if you are living in Germany with unlimited autobahns, you still have some traffic. It is quite hard to find a place to speed and you cannot predict the road and unfortunately there are some corners as well. Now, there is a solution for this!
I have an idea for Bugatti. Bugatti loves to introduce unique limited editions of Veyron. I think they could combine; railways and Veyron for another limited edition. As you know that, France has the most sophisticated fast trains in the world and Bugatti is a French brand. So, why they don’t combine these two different things :) A Veyron which could go on railways. Mercedes offers this technology on their truck range; with the help of a special feature, trucks are able to travel on the railways.
Veyron Le Locomotive will provide opportunity to speed up your car without any limitations and also you don’t need to hold the steering wheel and no need for ESP. There should be a button for using the railways, car will disengage the ABS and ESP, because railways don’t need any stability control and also there is no way to use steering wheel while breaking. So, there two systems won’t be necessary. Speeding up to 400 km/h will not a big problem and you can stay relaxed at any speed :)
I know this sound funny, however Bugatti is offering a new limited edition to increase profit. After some time, there won’t be any option to extend it and it could end up with very close to this funny model.

Future of driving: Radar

Last night I was watching a documentary about how the radar significantly changed the fate of Second World War. Actually this technology significantly changed world’s history. Now radars are used in everywhere; if you buy a Mercedes S Class with all technological gadgets, you will have parking radars, short range radars for scanning car in front you, long range radars to scan ongoing traffic. In Lexus, they also offer rear radar to move head rests to change their position before rear end crash.
What I am going to say will probably sound like talking about ultra thin flat screen in 1920s! Probably somewhere in Deutschland, some German companies are working on this. I am talking about radars to show the cars around us. As I know, cars are not flying and it is quite hard to scan the whole traffic in ground is quite hard but their assumption; cars will communicate with each other. With the help of GPS and mobile phone technology, they can tell other cars about their exact position and drivers can see what is coming next.
Some people are saying all these technologies will create cars which could drive by their selves. Actually, we have it and it is called taxi (Reference, Top Gear James May). I want to give a very simple example; do the airplanes fly without pilots? I have never seen a plane without pilot taking off or landing. Yes, they have lots of supplementary systems for fly safety but still they need pilots. It is the same with cars, as we have more and more technology we will keep driving the cars. Because, all these systems are identifying world with 1 and 0 numbers. Actually this perspective to world is very limited and I would not totally rely my life on a machine which does not know the number next to 1 and I will keep driving with the help of ones and zeros.

Symbolic Meanings of Cars

Most of us don’t realize but every brand, every car, in some cases every engine option have a symbolic meaning constructed by us. People tend to attach meanings to brands firstly, Mercedes is a rich men car, Bentley is an ultimate rich men car, VW reasonable price with good quality and it goes like that. Car companies also knew this situation very well and they try to add new meanings to their products by introducing better models and upgrading the quality! VW did this by introducing Phaëton and Bugatti Veyron. Veyron presented what VW can do and their ability in technology! Phaëton also introduced very innovative technologies to market and also became a flagship for VW and tried to change VW brand image. And this happened, when it is compared with a decade ago, VW’s brand image shifted up! Phaëton is also perceived as a luxury car but nobody tends to buy.
Mercedes, BMW and Audi is offering vehicles from small segment to luxury segment. They nearly have a vehicle in each segment and they love to create new ones. In addition to this, they are trying to increase more customers by offering a wide range of engine option from 1,6lt engines to 5lt engines in same car. As they offer many cars with many engines, they are differently priced. Extending product range is a good way to increase sales but also emerges different meanings to different products. There is a very good example for this; Mercedes C 180 Kompressor is offering 1,6lt engine as an entry level and C350 is the one model below the AMG model line. C180 K and C350 are offered in the same but their meanings are totally different. Firstly, they have a huge price difference. Someone who bought a C350 is perceived as a wealth person, because the car has bigger engine, consumes more fuel and more expensive. When all these notions came to together, it emerges a symbolic meaning for a very specific model. On the other hand, C180 K is perceived as reasonable priced Mercedes. Of course, it is quite hard to identify the wealth of the owner by looking at the engine size but this tends to happen most of the time.
Mercedes also offer high performance car line and named as AMG! They all have huge engines with enourmous amount of power. And there is an interesting diversification of two AMG models. 63 AMG and 65 AMG; S Class, SL Class and CL Class are offered by two huge engine options. 63 and 65! 63 is a 6,2lt eight cylinder engine which produces 525 horsepower and the car accelerate to 100km/h in 4,6 seconds. These figures are amazing and anyone who drives this car would be shocked! However Mercedes has something more shocking! 65 engine option, this is a six litre twelve cylinder engine with enormous amount of everything. It is producing 612 horsepower and 1000nm of torque which means it could rotate the world the opposite direction. This engine is also available with 63 AMG engine. Unfortunately, this 65 engine cannot transfer all its power to tarmac. The enormous amount of power cannot be controlled by the car and the performance difference between 63 is only 0,2 second faster. 65 engine could only provide that small amount of performance advantage, this situation is the same with while overtaking other cars. Too much power is uncontrollable and there is a very slight performance difference with the cheaper engine.
The price difference between 63 and 65 is more than 70 000 € for S Class in Germany. And you get nothing very special. But, people are buying 65! Are they crazy? You can spot SL 65 AMG or S 65 AMG in London very easily. And in London, it is impossible to use its potential. Here comes the secret thing, the symbolic meanings of owning S 65 AMG. When you buy this car, you show that you can afford the most expensive Mercedes which does not have a significant difference from the cheaper one, you will have twelve cylinders and aggressive looking car. This car becomes a part of the personal identity and representer of its owner! I have more money, I don’t care about anything else, I just bought it and I am in twelve cylinder club!
Symbolic meanings of products cannot be controlled very easily, customers are willing to emerge new and different meanings to every product and attach with a different social status. Therefore, extending product range and offering more option might help to increase sales but also hinders the risk of misunderstood by customers. Like Bentley and Aston Martin, offering a limited range of cars will strength their position on market and construct a very clear brand image. However in Mercedes, BMW and Audi; wide range of vehicles construct very different meanings and they will influence the main brand image. Extending the product line and the consequences of new products play vital role for constructing a stable brand image.

Perfect Combination for Bugatti Veyron

Matching shoes and handbags are vital for ladies. For every occasion they try their best to match two things together. This complicated and tiring process is a part of every ladies life!
If you are man, you don’t need to care about these things very much, until now! In Holland, a Bugatti Veyron is on sale with a same colour transporter truck. There is one thing more cool than Bugatti Veyron is a Bugatti Veyron with transporter truck with the same colour!
This interesting matching is available JamesList website. However there is one thing interesting; Bugatti is produced by VW and the truck is Mercedes Atego. In my opinion to make a better match, the truck should have been a MAN, as the MAN is partly owned by VW.
Anyway, if you have €895,000 to spend for a car, you have bargian here! Click Here
