BMW 5GT Tragedy

I don’t like to write these types of articles but recently I noticed that, I should do it. Last year, there are two things were revealed to humankind! Apple iPad and BMW 5GT. For both of them, it was unclear why you need one these things. Apple has the iPhone and Macbook series, why a tablet? Because, they found a very good niche market to fit their product and also Apple has consumers who are addicted to Apple. This is a very very very very big plus for introducing new products, because your customers are ready to consume. Anyway, iPad became a phenomenon and created a new segment and other brands also followed it. It is similar to Mercedes M Class in 1997, they created the SUV and BMW made the money :)
Let’s go back to BMW 5GT case! BMW also thought that, we can introduce a new car and people can buy it. There were very solid reasons but on paper! There are some people who don’t like normal 5 Series, because it is too low and they also don’t like X5 because it is too high. They want something in the middle. Something like car and SUV, something very unclear. And they did it and called 5 GT which totally collapsed with Grand Tourer concept. GT means, a luxury coupe for long journeys, not a car with a huge boot and raised up suspension.
As I mentioned it was great on paper but unfortunately those people are only on paper. 5GT was a very unclear car and people could not identify its purpose, similar to Mercedes R Class and Audi A6 Allroader. These cars are excellent machines but their potential customers are extremely niche. I am not saying there is a no demand exists and BMW created a parallel universe for 5GT. There are some existing demand for this type of cars but it is extremely niche. And the problem is the gap between 5 Series and X5 and 7 Series are not that big and people are not researching about cars on Google (We know what they search on Google). So, they cannot identify the 5GT and it ended up with a very weak demand.
Recently, BMW announced that the demand for 5GT was far below the expectations. Honestly, nobody was surprised with this news. We were expecting to hear this. I don’t like to say this but I said this exactly one year ago. And I am sad to see that 5GT is very close to failure.
My opinion, consumers perceive a vehicle based on its physical appearance and design. When they cannot position the vehicle properly and if it does not offer something extremely different, people don’t buy it! 5GT is more comfortable than 5 Series and easier to drive in city than X5 and 7 Series but people does not think this deep and this way. They mostly think, ohh 5GT looks like an SUV but it is not as good looking as X5 or X6, so why I should buy it? Moreover, it looks similar to 5 Series, again why I should buy it? In order to success a car, consumers should have a clear meaning or identification for it and they should not find it too similar to other cars with the same brand.
Mercedes did these types of mistakes with R Class, B Class and Smart series and failed! Unfortunately, automotive industry does not have Apple style brand addictive consumers. Even though, the existing the people most of the time cannot afford to buy the product.
(BMW 5GT in US market moved some of the demand from 7 Series to 5GT.)

Brushed Metal Exterior

In case you are planning to buy a new house with contemporary design, you might have seen some interesting interior designs. In my opinion, some of them are really creative and altered the traditional interpretation. Some of these new design concept change something really fundamental!

We used to have houses with walls covered with colour, this is what we all expected from a house. It was not usual to see a house interior with no colour, I mean no body was willing to have a house with a plain concrete walls. Nowadays, this idea starts vanish and people pay lots of money to have houses with a no proper colour on their wall. Actually they buy houses with plain concrete walls!

Honestly, I first saw this design concept in TV series 24 and I liked it. It took time to get used to it but it looks nice.

As the traditional walls are replaced with concrete walls, why don’t we have plain metal cars! I would like to have a car with brushed metal, I do not mean this as a colour. I don’t wish to have a colour coating, I wish plain metal, sure with protection coating and etc. But I don’t want any colours. People might think this will look weird and odd but it may look nice though. I think many people can remember that, DeLorean DMC was like this and it wasn’t looking that bad! I am pretty sure that car designer may introduce this option in few year’s time.

It is already available with Macbook Air and Macbook Pro. They both look exquisite.

Range Rover Autobiography iPad Edition

Another Range Rover is revealed in Geneva Motorshow. This new model is Range Rover Autobiography iPad Edition, sorry!!! Ultimate Edition. Very basically, this new model is a sign of Land Rover’s ambition to position the Range Rover into upper segment to compete with any potential SUV from Bentley or Aston Martin. For long years, Range Rover perceived as a luxury SUV but never been sophisticated like an Aston Martin or Bentley or Rolls Royce.
However, Aston Martin revealed a concept SUV and Bentley can reveal an SUV based on Audi Q7 at any moment. Therefore Range Rover has to be redefined. This new Ultimate Edition will turn Vogue into a very plain model. This edition has lots of highly crafted wood everywhere inside the car which I love very much :) The rear seat are only two, no room for third person. And this seating strategy is a clear signal of Range Rover’s future strategy. Like in Rolls Royce, Bentley and Maybach the rear seats are totally a different world. There are exquisite cup holders, again lots of leather and wood. Individual weather control buttons, buttons to play with your seats position. And there are two iPads with Bluetooth keyboards. Apple charges extra money for Bluetooth keyboards! These iPads has a tiny problem, are they going to be iPad 1 or iPad 2? I know this sounds really stupid but when you pay a lot of money for a car, you wish to have every equipment is latest ones, not from the warehouse. Probably those iPad will be second generation.
I think this new Range Rover “Bentley and Aston Martin, I am coming with iPad” edition will definitely increase the sales figures of Land Rover!

A film by Apple: iPad Inspired from real story BMW 5 GT

Consumption is very funny and very complicated to understand in some situations. Recently Apple introduced something which is called iPad! It is a machine which was designed by photocopy machine. Apple just increased the zoom and photocopied the iPhone’s design and send it to production. It looks just look a big mobile phone! However the material used in iPad makes it very exquisite, I cannot ignore this. But this does not help us to understand why we should buy a iPad? It is netiher a mobile phone nor a computer! It is between mobile phone and laptop !?! Is there a segment like that? Of course no, Apple just made it up!
Basically; nobody knows what iPad is, how we can use and why we should buy it! But many people bought it. I am pretty sure that, many of them have no idea what to do with iPad and found out that Apple is charging for every single extra! I am sure that, when you ask to Apple, they will send you a booklet why you should buy an iPad and help Steve to buy a bigger yacht! That’s the only reasonable reason to buy  iPad, just to make Steve rich :) Despite all these adverse things, Apple made a huge success! I guess Steve was impressed by the German car manufacturers while designing the iPad ;)
German car companies are the expert of creating new segments. Mercedes M Class, BMW X6, Mercedes CLS, BMW X1 are icons of new segmentation! And they all sold very well. Like iPad, German car companies are charging for extra single option! However Apple missed one point, German car companies are defining their new segment very clear and customers know what they are buying. When you buy a Mercedes CLS, you don’t expect to go off road or with BMW X6, you won’t be the king of Nürburgring! So everything was very clear until this! BMW 5 GT.
I am proud to announce that BMW 5 GT is the father of Apple iPad! Their DNAs are the same; they both very expensive, both of them charging money for any option, both trying to create a new segment and both are senseless! Why? Because, nobody knows why we should one these! I have no single idea why to buy a 5 GT !?! Actually 5 GT is not a coupe, it is lifted estate car without four wheel drive option. It is neither SUV nor estate and definitely not a sedan. So why we should buy one?
There is one reason for buying these pointless products. You would probably be willing to give this message to universe; I have lots of money to buy anything and I have no idea about cars and computers, and I want to be different. So when you combine these points, there is a one reason to buy a 5 GT and iPad! Just to show off :) I think iPad should be bundled with 5 GT ;)
Actually, I would prefer to buy BMW 5 GT. At least, it is very well designed, engineered car with many intelligent features. And you won’t need another car to drive this car :)

What is Countryman?

The Mini! Excellence of repackaging :) Personally I never liked the Mini. It is a very well made and a very nice car, it is combining the Mini heritage with sophisticated technology. BMW made a very good job and never ruined the heritage. However, I never like the Mini :( Despite its unique characteristics, it was a brand which is not very close to me. This is totally emotional! In my opinion, Alfa Romeo MiTo and Fiat 500 are totally much better looking cars than the Mini. Also Fiat 500 is slightly better than Mini while packing the heritage with contemporary automotive world. Especially the price. Mini is a overpriced car, that’s absolutely clear. You pay too much money for a small car. Macro priced, micro sized!
As usual BMW, transposed its product extension strategy to Mini, and Mini introduced the Clubman which looks like a Ford Transit from the back. It could not manage to achieve a success like normal Mini but some people bought it. And Mini followed the popular culture in automotive business and design a Mini SUV which is totally pointless. Yes, there is no competitor in this segment and it will collect the whole potential customers, if they are existed! Until now everything is fine, normal German style extension strategy in a British car.
But the most stupidest thing is, Mini Countryman (SUV) is not four wheel drive! Yes, it will be front wheel drive and you can have the four wheel drive only with S model. Very nice! A very expensive SUV which is not a proper SUV! I know, there are some SUV like this on market; they are only front wheel drive but they are not asking a price which is more expensive than an island! Those front wheel drive SUVs are cheap! This Clubman front wheel drive partial SUV will a very interesting car from Mini.
Actually more interesting than Apple iPad. Despite its pointless disadvantages, like Apple iPad, some people will just buy because it looks nice. Nicer than Mini Clubman and people will buy this weird SUV just to own it :)

Connect with Iphone forget the Nokia

Nokia is one of the oldest phone manufacturers on earth! I am sure anyone who has mobile number once in a life time used a Nokia phone! Nobody can ignore the mile stone role of Nokia on mobile communication. Even in mid 1990s, they were involved in unique, ergonomics and never gave up on PR Campaigns.
Despite Nokia iconic contribution to mobile industry, Apple directly dominated the market which was totally emerged by Nokia! My interest was caught in here; Iphone or Ipod connection in cars’ option list. This is not something unusual, it is very good way to listen your music and talk with your phone. The interesting point why Nokia did not introduce something “Connect with Nokia” or something similar to this!
They were major leader in mobile phone industry and they could have offerred this earlier or even now. Still I don’t see any connectivity feature of Nokia like Iphone. We are living in a world, old cheap car manufacturers are increasing their production quality and luxury car manufacturers diminish their quality.
