A few days ago, Bugatti revealed its most radical design yet – a permanent open-roof hypercar.

I know that the permanent open-top style is not new to the industry. However, it is completely new to a car that produces 1,600hp and can exceed 420 km/h! Driving faster than 400 km/h in an open-top car severely challenges the driver and passenger. I can only imagine the turbulence inside the cabin created at those speeds. I’m sure it will be safe, but I doubt it will be a pleasant experience for anyone to reach speeds of 400 km/h.

Importantly, though, no one is buying the Mistral for the speed – the lucky 99 buyers will own the final W16-powered Bugatti series. The W16 engine is not feasible anymore as a gas-only engine, and the world has changed. All brands are moving towards electric, and that’s why Bugatti is under the Rimac brand in VW Group. Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ Grand Finale for The Internal Combustion Engine

The world’s fastest mass-production car, the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, and Bugatti’s London dealer, HR Owen, has delivered three of them! Sadly, I can’t share my photos as the HR Owen Bugatti dealer is not open to the public. You can’t go into the dealer and take pictures. Once I had the chance, I guess that was all.

The Bugatti Chiron is the predecessor of the Veyron, and they share many features. Such as the engine! The W16 Bugatti engine is an engineering masterpiece from a different perspective. When the Bugatti’s W16 engine was announced at the beginning of the 2000s, the world was a different place. Massive engine displacement was somewhat part of Bugatti’s success and reaching 1001-HP was a fantastic benchmark. During those times, there was some rumour, that the W16 engine was based on two Audi V8 engines stuck together. This has never been confirmed or rejected. I guess that’s one of the automotive secrets.

Chiron Super Sport 300+ promises one thing, reaching 309 miles per hour or 498 km per hour. That is 500 km/h! This is thanks to aerodynamic revisions, an extra 100-HP and many other upgrades. Every single piece of the SuperSport 300+ is revised or redesigned to withstand this speed. The engine produces 1600-HP and 1600nm of torque. The fuel consumption is insane. I am not talking about servicing this Chiron.

For me, Chiron Super Sport 300+ is a great car and show how much we can push the limits of physics. Is it a logical car? Of course not. Does it make sense? Absolutely not. But it is an excellent piece of engineering to see how far we can push the limits of an internal combustion engine. This is probably the last fastest Bugatti with an internal combustion engine.

There are, or there were, only 30 cars available, and they are gone. Will this car pollute the world? Yes, but most of the owners will not drive it that much. You also can’t reach the top speed that easily. This is a piece of engineering; that’s how I see it, and that’s why I wish I had one. Honestly, this is the only Bugatti I wish to own. Because we won’t be able to see these figures again. I guess Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ is the grand finale for the internal combustion engine.

Bugatti Chiron Sport races with a Dassault Rafale Marine Jet

Bugatti released a video a few days ago. If you are reading this article in 2050, the thing to note is that humankind raced fighter jets with passenger vehicles. So, Bugatti decided to show how fast its Chiron Sport is against a fighter jet, as you might be expecting. What better fit for this race than a Dassault Rafale?

Before I criticize the video, let’s note that the Bugatti Chiron Sport is powered by an 8-liter quad-turbo W16 engine (designed in the late 1990s). This generates 1,500 PS and 1,600 nm of torque. The engine is coupled with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox delivering power to an all-wheel drive system, enabling the Chiron Sport to reach 420 km/h. It is a fast car, and you would never be able to experience its full potential.

The unique characteristics of the Chiron Sport are the ‘Les Légendes du Ciel’ exclusive edition, which is limited to twenty vehicles. All of these are probably gone now.

Bugatti Chiron’s Top Secret: Air Condition

Bugatti Chiron is the most powerful (and the most expensive) mass-produced vehicle currently available. In my personal opinion, Chiron is something from the early 2000s – using a W16 8.0 L engine to produce 1500-hp is a bit outdated. Chiron is an impressive car, but it doesn’t compare to the original Veyron that was the embodiment of a crazy idea brought to reality. Chiron is the polished version of the 1001-hp Bugatti Veyron.

Bugatti recently revealed an eccentric detail of the Chiron – the air conditioning unit. It is a system that cools you down when you press a button, but like everything in the Chiron, it is exaggerated. According to the press release, the air conditioning unit needs a cooling system, and that cooling system needs another cooling system! Understandably, this is due to the extensive heat generated by the W16 engine that produces 1500-hp and can travel up to 482 km/h (300 mph) Chiron Super Sport 300+ model.

As the numbers get mental, the laws of physics also start to push boundaries. To achieve the crazy speed of the Chiron, the windscreen is much larger and angled lower than an average car. Similarly, whilst the Sky View option offers two glass roofs, bringing additional sunlight to the interior, this results in a higher than average inner temperature.

Unlike regular cars, the air is not forced through the lower end of the windscreen. This action happens at speeds over 250 km/h. Therefore, the air conditioning compressor has to produce up to 10 kW to achieve cold air. As a guide, this amount of power could quickly cool down an 80 square meter apartment.

In ten years, we will see this technology downscaled to the other VW model for a more efficient cooling system. Sometimes I do wonder if VW Group is using the Bugatti brand as a testing bed and make it sellable to wealthy people so that while VW Group is doing its R&D, they recover some of the costs?

Bugatti Divo

The Bugatti Divo. If you already own a Bugatti Chiron or a Chiron Sport I am sorry to say that your cars are not slower. Bugatti has just revealed a new model called the Divo that doesn’t get up to 400 km/h! It can only do 379 km/h, so be aware that someone will be able to overtake you!

Although it is a new variantion of Chiron, the Divo still uses a historic piece in the form of a W16 engine that is largely based on the VW VR6 engine from the late 1990s. It still produces 1500-HP from its 8-lt W16 engine and costs €5-million. This time Bugatti decided to make a car that is designed to handle.

The Divo is 35kg lighter and has 90kg more downforce than the Chiron. The wide front splitter guides more air to the cooling system, and the rest of the vents are designed to create an air duct. The rear spoiler is 23% wider than the Chiron (1.83-mt) and is there to increase the aerodynamic force in order to increase the car’s handling.

Veyron and Chiron are not very well known for their cornering abilities. Due to their heavy engine, heavy gearbox and luxury items, the Veyron and the Chiron are as agile as a castle on a curvy road.

Bugatti realised this problem and decided to reduce the weight of the Chiron and re-engineer the aero dynamic structure of the vehicle so as to improve the handling and, as a result, we have the Divo. However, when you play with aero dynamics for better handling, you scrap your top speed.

You might be saying 1500-HP is a lot. However, the aero dynamic friction is really high at higher speeds and to increase the top speed beyond 300 km/h you need lots of horsepower!

Long story short, the Divo is a hardcore version of the Chiron, and shows what it really can do. It handles better, is track focused and more aggressive.

How has this happened? Bugatti’s current CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, used to be Lamborghini’s CEO. He was the person behind the Reventón, the Gallardo as the Sesto Elemento and the Aventador as the Veneno and Aventador J.

He knows how to impress customers and make their wallet lighter by offering a lighter car. We can see the same strategy with the Bugatti.

As Bugatti stated when the Chiron was released, there won’t be any cabrio versions, so we have to be ready for more aggressive Chiron derivatives.

Honestly, I like the Divo and the story behind making a Bugatti that can’t achieve 400 km/h. Winkelmann showed that Bugatti is not just all about the top speed, and I am glad he did it, because it was getting ridiculous. The Veyron was a great masterpiece for its time! The early 2000s was the era of top speed and we were all really impressed with the Veyron. However, the world has changed and Bugatti needed to change to survive, and to avoid being stuck in 20th Century.

Will I be able to let you see any photos of this car? Unfortunately not. As the London Bugatti dealer is no longer part of the Bentley dealership, I can’t get inside the HR Owen Bugatti showroom and take photos. I have tried my luck a couple of times and it didn’t work. As I understand it, since HR Owen moved the Bugatti into a separate branch, they want to attract real clients instead of people like me. As a result, I unfortunately won’t be able to post any close-up photos of the Divo.

The New Bugatti Chiron | HR Owen Mayfair London

Finally, I have managed to have a look at the Bugatti Chiron in real life at HR Owen, the Mayfair London dealer. The Chiron is the most powerful mass produced car available at the moment. The W16 engine produces 1500 HP with (number) of torque. Chiron is still an all-wheel drive and the gearbox is a 7-speed DSG placed between the passenger seats. The massive bump between the seats is the gearbox.

The interior is very luxurious. The Chiron is more like a long-distance cruiser than a short distance racing car. You will definitely feel an improvement in the interior compared to the Veyron. The Veyron had a really good interior, but Chiron does it better.

Despite the interior improvements, the Chiron is not like the Veyron, a ground-breaking car. The Veyron was the pinnacle of automotive engineering. The VW Group created a car that was thought impossible to make and that was the Veyron. To be honest, I was expecting something like this with the Chiron, but the VW Group was not able to invest a massive amount of money in the Chiron and develop everything from scratch. Designing a new engine, a new transmission and a hybrid system would cost billions. Therefore, the Chiron is the refined version of the Veyron, and there is nothing wrong with this.

So what I was expecting to see? I was expecting to see a 1500 HP hybrid powered car with a pure carbon-fibre body. Unfortunately, this dream costs a lot of money and the VW Group can’t afford this at the moment.

The Chiron is definitely a unique car, and I was very lucky to see one in real life. Unlike other cars, the Chiron does not have an engine noise like a power drill, and it still maintains an understated identity. What I can see with the Chiron, is that the VW Group has refined the Veyron, and has made it better, faster and probably more usable on an everyday basis.

On 21 March, 2116. 100 years from today, when a working Veyron was found inside a garage and placed at an auction at Bonhams in Mayfair, London, the bids will be so high. it will be the top news of the day. Love and Hate! The feeling I am experiencing for the Bugatti’s latest car, Chiron. I couldn’t feel the same excitement, with the Chiron that I felt with the Veyron, and the reason is very simple. Veyron was a ground-breaking car.

It was the first mass-produced car that generates 1001 HP from its W16 petrol engine. Veyron failed many times, but it was a very massive challenge for the Volkswagen Group to make the Veyron. Their engine test facility couldn’t handle the power, and the car failed at a private demonstration event. The deadline of the project was out of control.

Basically, Bugatti Veyron had everything that shouldn’t be on the table for a business. However, we all forgot those days and loved the Veyron. Actually, all those challenges and failed attempts to create a 1001 HP car was part of the game. If the Veyron was built like a Golf with no challenge or failure, I wouldn’t be writing about it.

Whenever I see a Veyron, I always remember the video that Veyron failed during the private demonstration day. However, I never considered that event as a failure. It was the solid proof of pushing the boundaries of automotive engineering.

Volkswagen pushed so hard to make the Veyron, so they didn’t experience similar failures with the Chiron. I am definitely sure, Bugatti has enough know-how to make their third vehicle with no problem. Lack of failure and sudden perfection makes the Chiron a bad car? Of course not, but it will not be as special, in my eyes, as the Veyron.
