A Cool Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon: Project Geländewagen

Coupe of weeks ago Gordon Wagener, the Chief Design Director of Mercedes-Benz, announced a brand-new G-Wagon. A collaboration with Virgil Abloh (founder of Off-White brand and artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s men wear collection). However, only one has been produced so far, with the project being named Project Gelandewagen. The car is inspired by the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG and looks fantastic.

The reason I am saying that this is a fantastic vehicle is because G63 AMG is undeniably the most pointless SUV. It has massive wheels, its engine is not fit for off-road drives, it makes too much meaningless noise and the exhaust is overexposed. I would even argue that the G63 AMG should have a different, bolder design than the traditional G-Wagon.

The Mercedes-Benz marketing team initially proposed the G-Wagon as a fashion item rather than a functional vehicle. Sure, this helped increase sales figures, but it distanced people like me from the G-Wagon. I think it’s a really good off-road vehicle which doesn’t need to offer an AMG engine. It should be something like a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon – a true off-roader!

Now Mercedes-Benz has the opportunity to offer a proper G63 AMG; it has been designed by Virgil Abloh and Gordon Wagener, LV men’s fashion director and the founder of the Off-White brand. It is only a one-off project, but I think it should be mass produced.

A bit about the vehicle itself: literally everything inside the vehicle is removed. The steering wheel is from the AMG F1, the seats are from the AMG GT, the chunky door handles are done. There’s brand new paint inside and outside. All dials are replaced with the GT racing dials. Their massive slick tyres reduce suspension height and project for the headlamps with duct tape.

This is a proper G63 AMG – I loved it, and I believe this is how it should be offered.

A Minor Facelift to the Mercedes-Benz G350d Professional

The ultimate car for the celebrities, designed to be driven on the high quality roads of Hollywood and the Mayfair, London. However, the reality is the G-Wagon you usually spot in the streets of posh areas is not the pure G-Wagon. Mercedes-Benz still sells the real G-Wagon, which is called G350d Professional. It is designed for off-road and bought by the people who really wish to do off-road. Therefore, G350d was offering not a very tempting interior and a poor exterior design. Recently, Mercedes-Benz decided to change the faith of the Professional and revised the exterior and the interior.

My suggestion, the existing interior parts are not longer manufactured and Mercedes had to do this. Thanks to this revision, G350d pro now offers a better interior comfort with a cooler exterior. Despite this revision, you will never ever spot a G350d professional on the Keeping Up with Kardashains. Prof is still a utility vehicle, not a vehicle to show off.

In case you wish to buy a proper G-wagon, go for the professional, it the real one.

Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon Facelift

The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon has received a minor facelift. And it was revealed just few hours ago. In case you have no idea about the G-Wagon, it is Mercedes-Benz’s oldest off-road vehicle and never changes in style. Until the mid 2000s, it was only used by off-roading enthusiasts and people who really loved them. After 2005, celebrities started to prefer the G-Wagon to look cool and avoid getting papped at the gym due to the G-Wagon’s uber utilitarian characteristics.

Despite the G-Wagon’s unchanged look, it has received some facelifts over the years. And the latest facelift is literally impossible to spot except for Mercedes-Benz’s new brand strategy of placing ‘d’ on the diesel engines like in the old days. Now it is called the G 350 d. This 3-lt diesel engine now produces 245 HP and 600 nm of torque. The G 500 now features the latest 4-lt turbo petrol engine with 422 HP and 610 nm of torque.

What about the AMGs?

G 63 AMG is now making 571 HP and 760 nm of torque and the enormous V12 G 65 AMG is producing 630 HP and 1000 nm of torque. And these models will probably be the best choice for anyone who wants to look cool.

Interior

The interior has received a minor revision that is really impossible to spot and also looks more modern; the pointers and dials have been tweaked. Regarding the exterior, restyled bumpers and AMG flared wheel arches are the places that make this facelift unique!

The G-Wagon still offers a low-range gearbox, three differential locks and chassis that can cope with the toughest terrain conditions.

If you’re hesitating over buying a G-Wagon due to its current popularity, go for the G 350d model. Its diesel engine and torque level gear this model towards off-road enthusiasts, rather than celebrity fans!

The New Mercedes-Benz G 500 4×4² (Square)

Last year, Mercedes-Benz extended and raised the existing G-Wagon and created a G63 AMG 6×6 version. Then they decided to shrink the unoriginal 6×6 G-Wagon and created 4×4 G-Wagon. Basically, Mercedes-Benz created a vehicle that already existed and took a very long path to create it again. And called this old new or new old, whatever it is, the G 500 4×4².

What is G 500 4×4²?

Essentially, the G 500 4×4 Square is a raised and shortened version of the unoriginal G 63 6×6 AMG. But the G 500 is powered by a 4-lt V8 turbo petrol engine (422 HP), not by an AMG engine. And the situation is getting worse. Whilst Mercedes-Benz is trying to make the G-Wagon cooler, they are ruining its heritage and identity bit by bit. Despite this DNA mutation, I really loved the extremely raised G 500 4×4 Square, because it does offer 45-cm ground clearance, epic suspension, travel to anywhere off-road with a petrol engine. The main reason I loved this version is its off-road capabilities. Higher ground clearance and larger wheels will definitely help you to play around in untouched terrains. However, powering this vehicle with a hungry V8 petrol engine is this model’s failing.

Unfortunately, the G500 4×4 Square will not be purchased by off-road enthusiasts, it will be purchased by celebrities or people who want to show off their wealth. By the way, this monster is capable of satisfying Euro 6 emission levels! I am sure some customers are really impressed with this fact.

Mercedes-Benz’s epic efforts to make the G-Wagon a cool vehicle have worked well. According to results from Daimler AG, the G-Wagon achieved a 17.6% increase in its sales figure when compared to last year. But I still miss the days when the G-Wagon was purchased by real enthusiasts, not by celebrities.

Is Mercedes G-Wagon Cool?

Is Mercedes G-Wagon cool? Is G-Wagon the best SUV? Shall I buy a G-Wagon? These questions go forever. However, people who are asking these questions were not aware of the iconic G-Wagon ten years ago and they would be considering it, uggghhh what is that!
Unfortunately, G-Wagon’s AMG model, G55 AMG preferred by the celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Hillary Duff, some Victoria’s Secret models and celebrities of Los Angeles. And the interesting fact, in Los Angeles, you would never need a serious off-road vehicle like the G-Wagon. But most of the celebrities are usual lack of taste and when they see something unusual, they found it cool and ruin the product by consuming.
The same happened to Mercedes G-Wagon! G-Wagon was designed for one purpose, off road! From the chassis to climate control buttons, everything designed for off-road not for the pavements of Los Angeles or London. Therefore, Mercedes G-Wagon is a painful car to drive on on-road. Steering-wheel is heavy, doors are heavy, the rear-suspension is a heavy-duty suspension. The aerodynamic efficiency of the G-Wagon is quite similar to Windsor Castle’s aerodynamic efficiency!
Basically, G-Wagon is designed for the off-road but due to its unusual popularity by the people who has no idea regarding to G-Wagon’s heritage. This SUV became uncool. I am really unhappy to see an iconic utilitarian vehicle became so uncool by the consumers.
However, G-Wagon is still cool because it is rough and tough. It will never give a proper ride on the road and hopefully, the celebrities and wanna-be celebrities will shift to Range Rover and leave the G-Wagon to us :)
Despite the negative image of the G-Wagon, I still love it! But I would never buy an AMG version of the G-Wagon or with 22-inch wheel! Simple is the best with G-Wagon. Steel wheels, no leather seats. Just you and the rough terrain!
Lastly, I really wonder, if %1 of the G-Wagon owners ever used the differential locks?

Price of Mercedes G-Wagon 6X6

Price of Mercedes G-Wagon 6X6 probably most asked question on internet. The main reason for this, Mercedes created the most pointless SUV and everyone wonders what is the price of this project.
Why pointless? Very simple, Mercedes G-Wagon is the pinnacle of the off-road experience. It offers state-of-art abilities, and adding two more traction wheels make the experience even better. However, when you employ a 5.5-lt V8 AMG engine with 544 HP and 758 Nm of torque with 3.6-lt tonne of mass weight does not make things better.
Actually, it makes things even worse. Because, G-Wagon has a very bad aerodynamic efficiency and this increases the fuel consumption. In addition to this, extra two wheels and their mass weights ruin the consumption figure.
Literally, Mercedes G-Wagon 6X6 needs a fuel tanker during a serious off-road experience to avoid any bad memories.
And the price of Mercedes G-Wagon 6X6 is €451,010 including the VAT!

New SUV for Dubai Police | Brabus Mercedes G63 AMG

New police SUV for Dubai Police, Brabus Mercedes G63 AMG. Dubai police has a very good reputation of using super fast cars for their fleets. Probably Dubai police is the only security force that features Bugatti Veyron with flashing lights on! I mentioned before about their range of super fast cars and now they added something new to fleet. Mercedes G63 AMG with Brabus modification. Brabus is a company specialised on modifying Mercedes vehicles and turn them into monster! And the story is the same with the G63 AMG, after Brabus the G63 AMG features 700 HP and 910 Nm of torque. Only needs 4.9 seconds to reach 100km/h and the top speed is 240 km/h.
Remember, Mercedes G-Wagon has the same level of aerodynamic design of a castle. Literally, G-Wagon is a moving wall, no aerodynamics. And it is heavy, more than 2,5-tonne! And also the G-Wagon is the coolest SUV on this planet and offers three differential locks, low range gearbox for serious off road experience.
Basically, it is impossible to run away Dubai police now. If you manage to lose the Veyron on desert, the G63 AMG will chase you there.
G63 AMG features gold air intakes and heated seats! Probably the most useless feature in Dubai.

History of Mercedes G-Wagon Video

History of Mercedes G-Wagon. If you are reading my blog, you may have realised that I am not a great fan of Mercedes. Ten years ago, I really like the Mercedes in terms of design but as my ability to judgement evolved. And I found other brands better designed and built, consequently Mercedes is my least favourite German car brand, except one model. G-Wagon is very special for me. I still remember the day the first G-Wagon I saw, I think it was 1985 or 1986. I was four or five years old and the strong look, unique design and reflection of the character impressed me a lot. After that, I deeply loved G-Wagon.

I know G-Wagon is hard to drive, it is not designed for city driving and etc. Many people told me all these stories and their decision was to end up with Range Rover. Yes, Range Rover is very nicely built and drives excellently on road. However, that’s not a G-Wagon. Since 1979, G-Wagon has the same look and improved engineering. As a result of this, I think my brain accepted the G-Wagon like a wild animal and never found it ugly or out-dated. This may sound funny and you may not believe me but this is a scientific fact. We never perceive an animal out-dated!

Anyway, Mercedes UK released footage of G-Wagon to explain its evolution and history. I know myself, one day I will buy a G-Wagon and keep moaning for Mercedes. Because, I consider G-Wagon separately than the Mercedes.

Informative and Sexy Mercedes G-Wagon Test Drive by Anastasia Tregubova

Mercedes G-Wagon test drive by Anastasia Tregubova, probably the sexiest and the most informative one. If you are reading my blog often, you might remember this name, and watched her previous test drive footages with many different cars. This time Anatasia is drives new G-Wagon or 500. facelift of G-Wagon since 1979.

As you would be expecting, Anastasia is a Russian and working for a Russian TV channel, so the test drive of G-Wagon is in Russian. But there is a solution to this problem! You can imagine the words like I do or enable the translation function of the YouTube. Hopefully, translation function of YouTube works quite well!

As I understand from the YouTube translation and my suggestion from Anastasia’s test drive of G-Wagon. It is a proper off roader with respectful level of comfort. Three differential locks will let you to go anywhere. The craftsmanship is at the Mercedes level and you know the rest.

The thing I like with the Anastasia’s test drive is the story. She mentioned about the history of Mercedes G-Wagon and how it was developed since 1979. As the G-Wagon is on production for more than 30 years, you can easily find test drive footages on YouTube very easily but it is quite rare to find a test drive with the detailed history of G-Wagon.

As I said before, Anastasia Tregubova should start doing test drives in English as well :)

Mercedes G-Wagon 6×6

Mercedes G-Wagon 6×6! Mercedes recently revealed their six by six SUV to automotive world. Six by six means, Mercedes G-Wagon has three axles and six wheels and each wheel has traction. This makes the G-Wagon 6×6 one of the most capable off road vehicle and increase the tendency to generate an unusual friendship with the nearest petrol station. Because, Mercedes fitted an AMG 5.5-lt with 544 HP and 760 Nm petrol engine. So the fuel consumption is not that impressive. Five locking differentials, AMG 7-speed double clutch automatic gearbox and tyre pressure control systems are quite charming as well!
However, G-Wagon 6×6 is the only public road legal SUV with six wheels, so you need to bear the adverse effects. And it is only limited to 30 units!
Lastly, what are these five differential locks? I think, the order of these differential locks are like these: Front, Middle (For 2nd Axle), Middle (For 3rd Axle), 2nd Axle and 3rd Axle differential locks. Sounds a bit complicated but these will help you to overcome any adverse terrain condition.
