Why I am Tired of Google

I am Uygar Kilic, founder and the editor of Cars & Life blog. I have been blogging for more than 4.5 years and wrote 1770 articles. They are not perfect, but I never give up writing!
I started to blog on December, 2009. Actually, I did some blogs before that they did not live for long. 18 December, 2009 I decided to create my own and write my thoughts, view, feelings about cars. Why? I always wanted to write about cars but couldn’t make it.
It is not easy to find a column on press! Actually, on August, 2007 EVO Turkey published a very tiny article with my name on it. Actually, I sent them four pages of an article but don’t know how, it was shrunk to a tiny column. Anyway, I think EVO Turkey is gone or changed hands.
When I started to blog, I thought it would be nice. People will my articles and like it. Few months, I received really low reader level, it was like 30 or 40 people per day. But I appreciated it, I created my own platform and people started to find on Google. The Google! Where things went totally wrong!
While I was writing my article on my blog, I realised that my traffic is going down and down and down. On July, 2010 I received only ‘one click’! Just one! But I didn’t give up and tried to understand how to increase my views? I started to cover more popular topics, updated more often (I write every day). And my readers started to increase, meanwhile I started share my blog articles on Facebook and Twitter. There was nothing else on those days.
But I was wondering why I cannot receive more readers? People like my articles but Google does not like me! And I found out that, there is a thing called SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). You basically, create a content that Google likes it and shows to people. Regardless of the quality of the content. According to Google, they have a technology to understand the quality of the content.
So I started to search about the Google and SEO. And found out that, Google appreciates your content based on links shared on different websites! That’s why many low quality blogs were receiving high amount of traffic. And interestingly, some of my readers shared my content over different websites, because I was creating content that most of the people cannot find it easily (Once Conde Nast Germany contacted with me to find out more about the Sophie Loren’s photos with Mercedes 300SL).
Hopefully, my traffic to grow but it wasn’t steady like other blogs. So, I revised the design, increased engagement on social media. The traffic started to grow, how? Google Image search. Google was adding the image search results to our traffic and one day, they realised it was wrong and stopped doing.
Actually, it was a very good idea. I lost some traffic but more people shared the content and my traffic started to increase. However, there was a constant update of Google search engine. And it was suppose to give penalty to low quality and fake content and appreciate the real and high quality content. But every time Google updated their search engine, they increase the exposure of the blogs who stole my content.
Yes, my blog was copied countless times and thanks to Google, I managed to remove some of them. But Google assumed that, they are better than my blog and kept showing it! And after few years, Google realised that it was wrong to show fake content and now they are gone. Thanks.
But the drama did not finish here, Google updated the search engine and my readers started went down, I increased the number of posts and covered fashion topics and Google updated the search engine and readers went down.
There was and also there is a content update on Google to reduce the traffic to bloggers, because we are not creating good content. How they judge the Google content, once more? Based on the +1 from the Google+, you have to use Google+! Unfortunately, getting +1 from Google+ is like expecting to have a dinner with Kate Upton at McDonalds, it is impossible. No one uses Google+, have you heard a friend of yours and told you this “I uploaded the party photos to Google”? Of course you won’t because, no one does it. Actually, Google+ mobile uploads automatically like other apps!
Anyway, I did not give up also, and started to watch the videos ( of Matt Cutts ( (He is the person responsible for SEO, spam and other things on Google). I followed his steps or directions and kept my content unique! And my blog is unique :) It is not super high quality but it is unique. People love it.
Unfortunately, Google doesn’t love me that much. And showed this by reducing my traffic to 10,000 views per month from the 30,000 views level. Of course, Google does not have problems with me but their updates to search engine started to ruin blogs like mine and blogger started to become a library of left over blogs. People started to loss motivation to write. Why?
When you don’t have likes or followers or clicks, many brands do not even contact with you. I mean, they don’t even respond to your emails! Someone is checking your ranking and assuming that, you are really bad because Google thinks you are bad and you started to loss everything. No more press accreditations or whatever.
Hopefully, this did not happen to me, because I attend to very few events and gave up with press pass   or accreditation. It is stressful!
The main point is, Google is tiring! While the Google is trying to reshape the internet, they are messing up with really unique and high quality content. I gave up with checking the traffic from Google Analytics for a very long time. Because, it is really depressing! It goes high few days and Google punishes you after that. I can see this very clearly from Google Webmaster Tools, it shows how many times the Google computers check my site and it is going down, why? I really don’t know.
So what shall I do? Instead of crying like Cartman from South Park? Usually, some bloggers spread their links to everywhere and this is called full-time blogging. It is painful and taking very long time! Some of them hire SEO guys to take advantage of Google, that works quite well, if you are using WordPress! Or pay Google, Twitter, Facebook for advertisement! That’s what they want to here :) But you need to be wealthy for this! Online advertisement is not cheap.
Anyway, I am sure Matt Cutts or his team will read this and may not agree some of my points. But I really wish the team of Matt Cutts to have some empathy and while revising the Google search engine, consider the real and original content. Also, press officers please don’t judge blogs based on clicks or likes or followers. Those things can be manipulated very easily and you may be engaging with a very badly written blog and assuming that it is really influential. And to bloggers, if you really love to write, just keep writing. Even though, no one invites you to press days or ignores to send you press releases. Create your own path, never give up. This is internet world, you can access wide range of knowledge.
I wanted to write this for a very long time and I think it was the right time.
I wrote this article around 02:50 AM in London time, so please ignores my mistakes :) Thanks a lot :) And also, thanks a lot to every brand who supported me on this tough journey :)

Top Gear Race Track is on Google Street View

Top Gear racetrack is on Google Street View. Vaww, very exciting news! Okay, let me be honest, this is very exciting news. It would be great to go around the Top Gear’s legendary racetrack. However, the way it was presented on YouTube was totally dull.
Google’s Street View car, Opel Astra was chased by the Stig. The Stig? The boring character of Top Gear and each time, it reveals his identity and destroys the game. The Stig was burning the tyre of a Mercedes SLS AMG GT Coupe. And burning more tyre and making donuts at the end of the video.
Level of creativity, absolute zero. Level of excitement, zero. Level of being interesting, really interest because Google Street View car is on the show.
Why I find the Stig and Top Gear dull? Unfortunately, Top Gear ran out of creative ideas. It has been more than ten years and each new episode is a repetition of the previous ones. At the end of the day, this is car show. What you can do with the cars? And they are replaced every seven-year. Even though, I write about cars, sometimes I found them really boring. And this happened with Top Gear. The Stig, races, burning tyres. They were fine for half a decade but not anymore.
Do I watch Top Gear? Yes and No! If you consider watching it by skipping, yes I do. I am sure if Top Gear reads this article, they will be mad at me. But this is what I really think about Top Gear.

End of World Wide Web?

End of World Wide Web is coming! I know this sounds like the cover of a cheap magazine where you see on pavement. However, we spend less on web site than 2011 during 2012. According to data from Wired September 2013 issue; on 2011 we spend 72 minutes per day on internet and this dropped to 70 minutes per day on 2012.

So what we did during the 2 minutes? We used more mobile apps! On 2011, we only spent 94 minutes per day on mobile apps and on 2012, we got crazy and spent 127 minutes per day! We reduced our web experience and compensate with mobile apps.

The main reason for this, internet is too complicated to use for basic things like checking weather or reserving a place at cinema. However, mobile apps gives us what we need! If you want to check weather, you only touch the weather app and that’s all.

As human beings are designed for laziness, we started to like the way how mobile apps make our life easier and started to approach internet as something a bit more complicated.

This dramatic decrease on internet may not look that bad but if you do a forecasting for future, we can see that mobile apps will be the future. In ten years time, internet will be a technology that won’t be popular as now, it will be used but not like old days. And app business will expand, as a result of this search engine wars will evolve into mobile app search wars.

Google Maps in Burj Khalifa in Dubai with a Typo at Height! // The World’s Tallest Building

Google Maps just released Street View photos from the world’s tallest building Burj Khalifa in Dubai in few days time. Before they release the photos to Street View, Google released a footage of how they took the photos inside and outside the Burj Khalifa.

However, they made a typo in the YouTube video, instead of mentioning the height of the Burj Khalifa 828-meter, they mentioned 282-meter. This type of typos happens all the time, and we all make it but when you see 282-meter i Burj Khalifa building, it looks funny :)

The updated the label, 828-meter :)

How to Find an Internship at Google?

Probably the most commonly asked question by my students and graduates; how to find an internship at Google? I think Hollywood heard this desperate screams and released a movie called ‘The Internship’.
It is about two guys working in marketing department of a company. When the company stops it operations, these guys technically become jobless and decide to try their chance on Google :) I am definitely sure The Internship is a very funny movie and we can have a chance to see what is inside the Google head quarters.

Mercedes Android

I have been criticising Mercedes for many things; branding habit, pricing, design, option list longer than a novel and etc. However, Mercedes contributes many new technologies to automotive industry and I always mention this. Even though the E Class can be one of the dull sedans on market but it offers state of the art safety technologies. Therefore, I always consider Mercedes as a good option, if you buy the technology pack!
For nearly two years, Google Android became a phenomenon. Google offered its first mobile phone in 2008 and now, they are controlling the market. Nobody was expecting to see experience this dramatic performance. Main advantage of Android system is, being open source! Anyone can change the codes and adapt the operation system to their devices. You can install Android to your washing machine, coffee maker, mobile phone and many other things.
Before Android was available, I was sure that one day Google would introduce something for automotive industry. But I couldn’t guess the software or the application. After the Android concept, it was very obvious that Android is going to be in our cars. Of course, it won’t be controlling the engine unit or transmission; actually it would be appear on the dashboard. Like mobile phone, the navigation screen will turn into a mobile phone screen and you can install application, send email, and search the internet.
Finally, this happened. Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster is offered with Android system, you can install applications, surf on the internet as you experience with your mobile phone. The only difference is, SLS AMG is slightly bigger than a mobile phone. This technology will be available in AMG models but not in cheap model :(
Mercedes offered a real innovation to industry, as usual they did not offer it to every vehicle. I think rival should offer the Android technology to their car range as soon as possible.

Achtung! Google

Google’s driverless car became very popular news in everywhere but nobody mentioned the threat! I am not a computer engineer but I do know that; whatever Google works on something, it mostly ends up with success. GMail, Google Earth, GoogleDocs, Google Translate, Android operation system and many other products. And with each product Google becomes a major competitor and sometimes removes some of its competitors, like Nokia vs. iPhone. Nowadays it is Google Android vs. iPhone!
Google Driverless car might seem a testing or project from Silicon Valley guys but this is an important threat to automotive firms especially Bosch and Siemens. These two companies are the manufacturers of engine control units. What is engine control management? Basically, that is everything for your car. It controls engine and its unit also it communicates with other modules like traction control, stability control, radar guided cruise control, automatic breaking system, electric need of the other modules and components. Basically it is the core of the car! And Google’s car is planning to enter this market.
Google is very clever, every new car on earth has engine control unit and other components and market is mainly supplied by Bosch and Siemens. And very profitable! However it is extremely hard to enter this business, you cannot assign your Google Earth team to develop automotive software, because it will end up with catastrophe. In automotive dictionary, catastrophe means accidents and destroying the brand reputation. Therefore car companies may not be a very happy to work with a company which have no experience in automotive except Google Street View car!
This does not mean that Google can create its own automotive department and offer Android for your engine! For that reason, Bosch and Siemens should consider this stupid Toyota Prius driven by Google Search Engine! As I can see from the pictures, Google is recording every kind of information from the car’s sensors. Automotive guys, I know you understood what I mean!

Google: GDrive

Our lovely brand Google spent time and created a new project for us. As you know that, Google is offering everything free to us! I really don’t know why they have high amount of love towards. However their services are the most sophisticated ones. After one decade, our computers turned into a machine to connect Google, nothing else. Sure, Facebook too! Without Google computer will be a bit useless.
Google realized this fact and they invested on automotive business. And their CEO told something very interesting. His suggested that, if cars were invented after computers there wouldn’t be accidents. The cars would be driven by computers and computers never make mistake! Yes, computers never make mistake. They just destroy everything in couple seconds, and they are very good at this thing. Honestly, Google services working really well when you compare with Microsoft! But still when it goes off, it terribly goes off.
Based on the Google’s suggestion, computers will be better drivers than us. So, if you are very sure about this interesting statement, why the airplanes are still operated by human !?! Current commercial airplanes have the most sophisticated computers and they nearly make no mistake but there are still pilots! Based on Google’s suggestion everything should be controlled by computers and when the computer crashes everything will crash.
Unfortunately I do not agree with this. Even though Google’s driverless Toyota Prius had no incident for 140 000 miles (224 000 KM). And this is a very good result for a car which is driven by chips. However; if this car’s chip misinterpret the environment and go crazy, I cannot imagine the consequences and it would be worse than human mistakes.
My suggestion to Google; they should keep developing this technology but also they should focus on educating the drivers at the same time! Google can open GDrive service to educate drivers about dangerous driving. Instead making interesting statements, Google can both develop driverless car and train people.

Google Android Car

Since 2000 Google became a part of our daily life and we cannot live without it. Google also know this very well and releases new application all the time to strength our relationship. Their last attempt Google Android is an important signal for our future.
This Linux based mobile operation system is an open source system, which means you have the codes and if you know enough programming, your washing machine can be controlled by Google Android. From this point of view, it is very clear that Google will be in everywhere in following years. And we all know that Google is becoming part of automotive life but taking steps very slowly and carefully.
Google Earth and Google Search are now available in BMW and Audi but this is just the beginning. In following years, Google or a car manufacturer will release Google Android Car! This will be running in our navigation screen and like today we will be controlling everything from there. I don’t think Google will interfere with engine management. But they will take a place in human-machine interface. As Android is free and Google has a better reputation than Microsoft, cars with Google Android is not something very utopic! In addition to this, I am pretty sure that we would be able to install application to our car’s navigation screen!
Just remember the mobile phones ten years ago ;)

GM powered by Google !

Last one year was very hard for US car makers. They lost their kingdom and defeated by Japanese car makers. Everything went very bad for them. US car makers were the king of automotive industry and nearly one hundred years later, they survived only with the help of huge amount credits! A few days ago GM was saying thank you to everyone and this flashed some ideas in my mind.
Of course, US car markers tried their best to be worst :) Hummer, huge petrol sucking V8s, ignoring diesel or any other alternative and designing car which were uglier than anything. Did they change their mentality? Of course no! Still you can find huge SUVs with huge petrol engines, they are not offering some different since one decade. Even last year’s trauma did not make any change. Actually, I am sure that many people in those companies are doing their best to safe their company but the mentality of company does not change in one night!
And ten years ago something else came into our life! Google. We did not understand how created a relationship with Google but now our whole life relies on Google. Without we cannot even do very basic stuff :) And Google shares something in common with US car companies! They are in same country, one firm is making fortune, the other one is dying.
So my suggestion, transfer people from Google to car companies in US and let Google guys to do your marketing and product design. They don’t know automotive industry but how worse can it be? Really! You all know automotive industry and we know the story. So, how worse can it get? Actually, Google guys are very good that designing new products and on marketing strategies. Give them a chance ;)
