The New Mercedes-Benz GLE

Mercedes-Benz recently revealed the fourth generation GLE (otherwise known as the ML or M-Class). The first generation was recognised as entirely ground-breaking when it was first revealed in 1997. Prior to it being unveiled, the SUV did not exist; Mercedes-Benz created a new market. They did quite well with a half-baked vehicle. Despite this problem, it was a really good-looking vehicle.

Then the second generation of M-Class arrived. Despite the widespread improvements across every dimension of the car, the design did not benefit from the revamp, resulting in the M-Class becoming known as the most boring SUV.

The third generation failed to escape the boring reputation and was simply an average SUV. I, personally, couldn’t find a single reason to own one. One addition to the third generation that was interesting, however, was that Mercedes-Benz dropped the rear-differential lock and made it a proper soft off-roader. Additionally, the facelifted ML became the GLE!

We are now graced with the presence of the fourth generation of this historic brand and the design reached a different level. It looks hilarious and it kind of resembles the early sketches of the M-Class in the mid-1990s. Despite its melted LEGO design, it has some good tech underneath. Now, if you lose traction, the suspension system increases the pressure on the wheels to increase the traction, which is a brilliant trick! Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz has yet to outline whether the new GLE has the rear differential lock or not.

Keep in mind, if you buy a 4-cylinder version, it will contain the old 4MATIC system. If you buy the larger engines, you will benefit from the new 4MATIC system that, currently, very little is known about.

Worth to buy? Kind of! The BMW X5 looks like an estate car and the Audi Q7 looks quite interesting. The Range Rover is being a Range Rover. Literally, it is up to you.

New Mercedes-Benz GLE Review

The new Mercedes-Benz GLE (Facelifted ML), also known as ML (M-Class). If you are a bit confused, Mercedes-Benz has decided to revise its SUV branding strategy and henceforth, each SUV will be named based on its sedan model and start with GL! ML or M-Class is now called as GLE. This means GLE is represents the SUV version of E-Class. But let’s finish this boring conversation and move on to the good bit.

The new GLE is the face lifted version of the ML and you can easily understand this from the design resemblance. Personally, GLE’s exterior design looks like a teddy bear. Despite the lovely exterior design, its interior design is quite Mercedes-Benz in style. This means the interior design is ergonomically perfect but conservative to preserve the design language.

Engines

With the new GLE, a new product is also introduced, the GLE 500 e 4MATIC. The tiny ‘e’ means plug-in hybrid and it is part of the new branding strategy of Mercedes-Benz. The GLE 500 e is powered by a 3-lt V6 BlueDIRECT petrol engine with 333 HP and 116 HP of electric power. The combination brings 442 HP and 650 nm of torque. It can drive up to 130km/h with pure electricity. However, the engine is coupled with the 7G-Tronic Plus automatic gearbox and it is a bit old!

Safety

The safety features of the GLE have really improved! Unlike the previous M-Class vehicle, Mercedes-Benz decided to feature all their pre-crash safety systems and driving aid features on GLE. This means; DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian protection, BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and PRE-SAFE® PLUS. Basically, with these features the GLE is more competitive with the BMW X5, new Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90.

New Gearbox, 9G-Tronic

The 9G-Tronic is now available with the diesel powered GLE models. The 9G-Tronic is the latest 9-speed automatic gearbox from Mercedes-Benz and thankfully, you can order the off road package with this transmission as well. The 9G-Tronic offers more efficiency and thanks to a new torque convertor, the power loss to drive train is reduced. Mercedes-Benz emphasises that the 9G-Tronic is impressive on the gear change, but I will reserve judgment until I have tried it for myself.

Offroad

The GLE offers some off-road ability. The Off-Road Engineering pack offers a reduction gear (low range) and a 100% lockable centre differential. Locking the central differential may help on off-road but you need to lock the rear differential for a perfect experience.

Additionally, the Active Curve System that is available with the S-Class Coupe is now available with the GLE. Basically, this feature provides a better driving experience through the adjustments of active anti-roll bars on each axle. Of course, you can still order the legendary AIRMATIC suspension for the best off-road and on-road driving experience.

In my opinion; the GLE is a really really good car. Unlike previous models, Mercedes-Benz did not deprive it of pre-crash and driving aids. Also, the plug-in hybrid model is an important achievement. However, the GLE still looks a bit normal or conservative and may not captures the interest of different tastes. Despite this fact, it will offer a really good driving experience for longer journeys and also, gives you the option of an off-road experience.

New Mercedes ML 350 CDI Test Drive: The Stealth SUV

New Mercedes ML or M-Class the stealth SUV. I still don’t know why Mercedes calls M-Class instead of ML. Anyway let’s go back to subject, Mercedes ML always had a special place for me. I still remember the first day I saw the ML on a magazine in 1997. Mercedes ML was something out of this world! There was no other vehicle, which looks sportive and agile and capable of off road driving  like ML. Literally, Mercedes ML created the SUV segment. Before that, there was no vehicle called as an SUV!

Unfortunately, my emotions towards the ML changed during the years. In 2005, Mercedes revealed the second generation ML with more technology and higher quality in details and with a but. In terms of technology, it was better but in terms of design it was the icon for the boring Mercedes. I never felt anything about the second generation ML produced between 2005 and 2011. That ML was a good car and that was all. The design was not provocative!

Today we have the new Mercedes ML. It is a car where you can experience a very bold and strong front and definitely unattractive rear end with not very proportional rear wheel arches, which make the wheels look very tiny. When I saw the new Mercedes ML, I always felt confused. One end is very attractive like the first generation but on the other hand, the rear end was definitely the opposite. Thus, I was between love and hate condition.

Last week, I had opportunity to drive a brand new Mercedes ML 350 CDI thanks to Mercedes Benz Turk. I was excited to drive it, because it was my one of the favourite car in Mercedes range in 1990s.

Mercedes ML 350 is powered by a 3-lt turbo diesel engine with 255 HP and 619 Nm of torque. The engine is coupled with 7G-Tronic automatic transmission and capable of reaching 100 km/h in 7,4 seconds with the top speed of 224 km/h. And you will create 179 g/km CO2.

Anyway let’s skip the boring stuff and jump to test drive or living with Mercedes ML for 24 hours. I had the new Mercedes ML for 24 hours in Istanbul. Istanbul is one of the most beautiful cities in the world with a very bad reputation of traffic! Unfortunately, there are too many cars and this does not make the driving that motivating or easy or fun at all.

My journey started with the stop and go traffic. Unfortunately I did not have the Distronic Plus (radar guided cruise control with full breaking function) system, so the stop and go traffic was a bit painful. My first advice is, definitely order the Distronic Plus when you buy a ML. After the fun of stop and go for more than an hour, I had the best experience for an SUV, parking!

New ML is a bit large vehicle, 4,8 metres! And large vehicle means, harder to park. However, new ML does not feel like a large or huge vehicle, it is really nimble for its size and agile. Thus, ML is quite easy to park but still it is 4,8 metres. Try not to park into smaller spaces!

After the parking experience, I had the rush hour traffic with very high tempo. And I had chance to experience stop and go ECO mode. Basically, ML stops the engine whilst you wait in red light or traffic and runs the engine as soon as you lift off from the break pedal. Eighty-percentage of the time, the ECO stop and go system work brilliantly and very few times it was annoying. However, this does happen with every brand, not a problem of Mercedes. Moreover, you have chance to disengage the ECO mode by pressing a button on the dashboard. But I don’t recommend to turn off, because this system save fuel!

During the trying traffic I did not feel that tired. Thanks to sitting position and easy to see further distance than a family sedan, I had quite good time with the ML. Also, connecting my iPhone to ML’s entertainment system was a very big plus! Don’t worry Bluetooth system does delivery very good sound quality and very easy to operate the phone from the steering wheel. And if you want to charge your iPhone, you need to buy the Mercedes’s iPhone cable!

As I started to talk about the iPhone, I cannot ignore the clear and sharp quality of the navigation screen. It was very clear and easy to see the screen, also very easy to operate. I used the navigation system during my all journeys and never let me down. Also, you can operate it quite easily. However, I felt the lack of Google Maps and Google search service. I wish that Mercedes offered this technology.

Interior quality of the new ML is really good. Despite the same steering wheel, air condition controls and navigation screen with other models, I did not feel any problem with ergonomic and controls were very easy to operate. The extensive leather covered whole central console hindered the adverse conditions of steering wheel and buttons. ML offers Bentley style leather extension from window to foot well. And this does look fantastic, you should order this option as well. I really don’t like to see plastic parts in the upper and lower parts of the central console and leather extension covers all those areas.

Boots space is really big enough for anything, I don’t think you will struggle to fit your luggage or shopping bags. Rear seats do also offer more than enough legroom and headroom. The driving experience is improved with the AirMatic suspensions, which you can manipulate from sport to comfort and revise the handling and comfort level at any time. However, you still have feeling of higher central gravity like in any other SUV.

Another good thing with the ML was the hill descent control or DSR system. I used DSR system while parking under the shopping centres with step entrance. I set the down hill speed to 18 km/h and it quite fun. Unfortunately, new ML does not offer rear-locking differential and we all know that we will not use ML in any condition to demand rear-locking differential system. So don’t worry!

And lastly, Mercedes ML is a stealth luxury SUV. No one notices the ML and you don’t see people looking at you all the time. I think new ML is a very good undercover vehicle. You have the luxury, comfort, performance and no one notices you!

In general, new Mercedes ML does look good, drives very well and engaging for a Mercedes. I cannot say it is like a BMW X5 or Porsche Cayenne but you will not miss those vehicles with ML. Interior quality is way improved, there are lots of safety and helpful systems (buy them, they all worth the money), ride is excellent, driving experience is not tiring at all. Mercedes really did a very good job with the new ML, it does worth a test drive. Don’t skip it.

Mercedes with Illuminated Star: Really Necessary?

Mercedes with illuminated central grill star. Mercedes recently started to offer illuminated star with M, GL, C, CLS and E-Class models. Unfortunately, this feature is not available with A, B and GLK-Class models. Basically, if you are wealthy, you can blind your star.
Actually, I was planning to write something funny about this feature but I changed my mind. Because, I was trying to understand why Mercedes offers a feature, which is mainly aimed for posing. I am sure illuminated star is a part of the design element but customers will not perceive in the same way. Therefore, identify of the feature will not match with the image.
Does Mercedes need brand awareness? I really don’t think so, everyone on this planet knows Mercedes. There is always a Mercedes in everywhere on this planet, so the three-point star does not have any problem with brand awareness. So, why people should need to represent their Mercedes even at night? Actually, is it necessary to do? Even at night, we can understand a Mercedes very easily, it is not like Pagani only few people know the brand name.
I know after this post some people will say, there are brands doing this as well. But Mercedes is a cult, an icon. It is associated with wealth and success. Yes, other brands also mean this but no one can emphasise like Mercedes.
My opinion instead of getting this feature, go for Distronis Plus system. It will save your life and more functional then illuminated star.

Interview with Rob Halloway (Mercedes-Benz UK)

Today’s interview is with Rob Halloway, PR Manager of Mercedes-Benz UK. He is the person responsible for the passenger and commercial vehicles, and one of the most active Twitter users from the automotive industry. We know each other through the Twitter and the MIPAA.
From the beginning, Mercedes-Benz did a great hospitality for me. They picked me up from the train station with a Mercedes C350 Coupe. It was a fully loaded vehicle with everything, radar guided cruise control, blind spot system, traffic sign recognition, and ventilated seats! Five-star transportation.
Mercedes-Benz HQ is always amazing place for someone, who likes cars. They have many different types of vehicles in one place, from trucks to AMG high performance vehicles. Actually, my best piece was Lego Unimog that has more than one thousand parts and takes around at least six hours to build it!
With Rob, we talked about the new Mercedes vehicles. In 2011 and 2012 Mercedes revealed many new vehicles; SLK, CLS, SL, M-Class, B-Class and Actros truck. He summarised each vehicles’ unique feature and explained the new crash prevention system in B-Class.
In addition, we talked about the social media, its role in automotive industry and whom should manage it!
And, his journey with the Actros truck for a camping trip! And you will see what he drive at work ;)

Again, thank you very much to all Mercedes-Benz team for their great hospitality :)

The Actros camping post is here!

Mercedes M-Class and B-Class: Design Similarity

There is an unusual similarity between two new Mercedes models, M-Class and B-Class. The new M-Class looks brilliant from the front, but I cannot say the same for the rear end! The new B-Class looks like pretty much similar to the preceding model, but each angle of  is totally new, but you still have the similar look. Beside, B-Class offers state of art new technologies for its segments. Such; radar guided cruise control, collision prevention system.
When I was checking the rear end of the new M-Class, I realised that it looks similar to new B-Class. It sounds a bit weird, but M-Class has a very similar boot door to B-Class.  When I first saw the rear end, I remembered the B-Class immediately.
Have a look, may be you will see the similarity as I do!

New Mercedes ML

I don’t publish new car photos to my blog, but I could not stop myself to share this time. The new and ugly Mercedes ML. Sorry the new and more conservative ML! My favourite is the first generation!
Okay, it was too harsh for the new ML. I really like the front of the car, but the rear is terrible. Looks like a Lincoln Navigator :(

Range Rover Terrain Response vs. Mercedes ML On&Off Road Package

On 1997, Mercedes revealed its new model ML. It was the first SUV vehicle on market. At that time, ML was one of the best-looking vehicle in Mercedes range, but it wasn’t built that well and not well equipped either. All these adverse conditions did not change my perspective to ML.

On 2005, Mercedes revealed the new ML with proper quality and with Mercedes class technological gadgets. And this time, vehicle was not looking that nice! It was too conservative! And I never really liked it. Actually I don’t have much to say about the this version.

A couple of weeks ago, Mercedes revealed the ML. This time, it looks wonderful from the front and nothing special from the rear end. Anyway, this contradicting design concept is not my main issue. Since 1997 ML always offered technologies, which can be found in other Mercedes vehicles. This time, they did something different and revealed an off road technology. Now you can move a knob and choose appropriate road condition. And vehicle makes necessary changes for that particular road condition, actually it is designed for off road conditions. Interestingly, Mercedes did not name this technology like Off Road Matic or Off Road Plus! Actually they named this system as On&Off Road Package. And as usual this is an optional feature.

This technology is not something new in SUV Market. Land Rover offers this technology since 2004, branded as Terrain Response and it is really cleaver. The logic is the same with Mercedes, you choose the appropriate terrain and vehicle does the rest. I found it really creative and useful. Anyone without any knowledge of off road driving can deal with any adverse condition. And unlike Mercedes, this is standard in whole Land Rover and Range Rover range.

Unfortunately, Mercedes saved some cash while placing this knob. Terrain Response knob or buttons in Land Rovers are really nicely designed and they look amazing. The plastic and the metal used in a good harmony to avoid any cheap feeling. But Mercedes ignored this fact a little bit. As you can see from the photos, it is all covered by plastic and there are only few metal parts. The whole panel is plastic and it does not look expensive. As the new ML will be expensive, I was expecting a much better quality for this part of the console. They did a great job with the leather and wood but they forgot the knob!!

Bentley Continental SUV

During last one decade, we couldn’t ignore two things. SUVs and Google! They suddenly take a part in our lives whilst we are not aware of their existence. Google started as a basic search engine web site with a plain design. As the years have passed, they developed more and more and more. Finally, end up with taking your home’s photo and publishing on Google Earth.
SUVs are the same, it started with a plain design of Mercedes M-Class and chased by Dinosaurs in Jurassic Park! After this traumatic event, SUVs started to chase us in everywhere. Nearly, each manufacturer thought about an SUV model inside their model range. “It would not be a bad idea to offer an SUV, everyone likes it”. Even the Dacia’s ultra-cheap SUV received a respectful demand from all around the world. I am not saying the demand to BMW X Series, Mercedes ML, Range Rover, Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7 and the others.
As the SUV became so addicted to automotive industry and impossible to take out from the market. Some manufacturers started to think about their own interpretation of SUV. I mean the Bentley Motors. If you don’t know let me tell you, Bentley is owned by Volkswagen and Continental family shares many parts with VW Phaëton. Anyway, Bentley received unexpected demand around the world since it was reveal on 2004. It was offering everything; powerful engine, luxury, four-wheel drive, exquisite design. But, it is not an SUV, that’s the minor problem. People want to have a luxury SUV not a four-wheel passenger car.
If you want to buy a luxury SUV, the alternative is extremely clear; Range Rover. That’s the best luxury SUV on planet. Unfortunately, rest of the competitors are imitating Range Rover’ style but it is not working that well. Ask anyone for the ultimate luxury SUV, they will say Range Rover. From this basic scientific research, we can assume that; there is a great market for luxury SUVs.
Let’s go back to Bentley HQ; most probably they received some reports from Germany for a potential SUV model. It will be explaining how great it would be to have SUV under the Bentley brand and how we can make money from this. Honestly, this is totally right. People would definitely buy a Bentley Continental SUV. Because, it is an SUV and it is a Bentley!
So, the problem is production; and it is easy also. Audi Q7 has meaningless big and long chassis for and Audi but it would be a great match for Bentley. Just change the exterior design and use the chassis. The interior will be same with Continental FlyingSpur, so there is nothing to worry. The drive train would be the same with Q7 but they should have low range gearbox (take from VW Touareg) and a better off road capability than the Q7. It will be expensive and try to compete with Range Rover. Therefore, it should offer state of art off road capabilities. And customer will be expecting to see something similar to Range Rover, even though they would never ever use on off road.
Basically, in next five year I am expecting to see a Bentley Continental SUV based Audi Q7 chassis, using VW Touareg’s off road gearbox and interior from FlyingSpur. They only need to design exterior and do the necessary long term testing, which they would be doing at the moment. There were some rumours about this and Bentley denied the SUV. Let’s make a flash back to year 2001, Porsche mentioned, “we will never use a diesel engine” but they are using now. So, it won’t be a surprise to see one.
