New Mercedes-Maybach S680 V12 4MATIC

After a very long time, probably 6-7 years later, I started to blog in the middle of the night. There is one reason for this: the Mercedes-Maybach S680 4MATIC V12. After years and years of waiting, Mercedes-Benz finally released a V12 4MATIC sedan. For a short period, G65 AMG V12 was available, and it was four-wheel drive. However, there was no V12 sedan with an all-wheel-drive system.

As you would expect, Mercedes-Maybach is the perfect incognito luxury sedan that has the potential to eat the market share of Bentley Flying Spur and Rolls Royce Ghost. Mercedes-Maybach is half a decade ahead of both brands in terms of technology, including its driving assistance systems. However, the cool factor or multiplier of Maybach is not as strong as the British brands.

Anyway, the Mercedes-Maybach S680 4MATIC is powered by a proper 6-lt V12 engine producing 612 PS and 900 Nm of torque (that’s a lot!), paired with a 9-speed automatic. 9-speed automatic and V12 is another first-timer. The sheer amount of torque produced by the V12 was always a transmission breaker. As we can see, Daimler AG’s metallurgy department found a way to cope with the torque.

These are some of the party tricks of the Mercedes-Maybach series. Yes, affordable V8 models are available as well, including a V6 for the Chinese market, Mercedes-Maybach S480 4MATIC (3-lt, 333 PS, and 480nm). However, the party tricks of Maybach are amazing, and I copied them from the press release directly. Just ignore the pricing; if you can afford it, you won’t be bothered by the pricing.

  • On request, the exclusive appearance of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class can be further enhanced by a two-tone paint finish (14,875 euros) with a fine dividing line. A total of ten colour combinations from the Mercedes-Maybach paint chart are available for this.
  • When the electrically powered comfort doors at the rear (1606.50 euros) are operated, they open and close with no human effort even on gradients. Integration into the infotainment and control system MBUX and Blind Spot Assist ensures a high level of operating convenience and additional safety. In combination with MBUX Interior Assist in the rear, the closing action of the automatic comfort doors can even be started or stopped with a hand gesture.
  • Thanks to rear-axle steering (1547 euros), the S-Class feels as manoeuvrable as a compact car when driving in town.
The revolutionary headlamp technology DIGITAL LIGHT (2249.10 euros) allows completely new functions, for example the projection of guidelines or warning symbols onto the road surface.
  • With adaptive rear illumination (345.10 euros), the brightness and colour temperature of the interior lighting is adjustable in several stages. The LED spotlights are adjustable for position and size, allowing use as reading or lounge lights.
  • MBUX Interior Assist in the rear (523.60 euros) is able to detect rear-seat passengers. In this case the head restraints extend automatically. Intuitive hand gestures can be used to control the rear roller sun blind in the panoramic sliding sunroof. This is available in conjunction with MBUX Interior Assist in the front (642.60 euros).
  • With the MBUX high-end Rear Seat Entertainment system (2558.10 euros), passengers in the rear can also enjoy the full MBUX experience with direct access to vehicle functions. It is possible to watch films and access internet content on the two fully-integrated 11.6-inch high-resolution displays, for example.
  • The silver-plated champagne goblets (3808 euros) round off the exclusive atmosphere in the rear of the Mercedes-Maybach. A tailor-made insert in the stowage compartment and two matching holders in the centre console hold the goblets in place even when on the move.

Technical details are;

  • S580 4MATIC: 3.9-lt V8, 503 PS + 20PS (electric boost), 700nm and 4.8-sec to 100km/h.
  • S680 4MATIC: 5.9-lt V12, 612 PS, 900nm and 4.5-sec to 100km/h.

Would I buy it? Yes!

Mercedes-Benz Maybach G 650 Landaulet

Mercedes-Benz did it again! They created a sub brand and then stuck it to every Mercedes-Benz in existence. The iconic (this is very questionable) G-Wagon is ruined, first by offering the AMG, secondly with the G63 AMG 6×6, thirdly with the G63 AMG 4×4 and, finally, the Maybach.

From the outside, the Mercedes-Benz Maybach G 650 Landaulet looks fine, and it also has some retro touches from the past Mercedes-Benz models. However, the G-Wagon design is outdated and now preferred by people who want to show off. Also, in the meantime, the G-Wagon is not as well built as the old days, and the proof is here.

The main issue why I have with this G-Wagon is that the Maybach extension is too much for it. I drove this car, and was not comfortable ride at all. You are still driving on a ladder frame chassis and leaf springs at the rear-axle. Despite these facts, Mercedes-Benz did a great job with the car. I really love the rear seats and the final touches.

Do my comments matter? Actually, no. This car will be produced with a number of 99, and I am sure those cars are already gone. Mercedes-Benz has a very strong emotional bond with customers and it won’t be a struggle to sell all them. However, stretching a brand like Maybach sometimes can create uncomfortable situations like this.

What about the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class? My suggestion: go buy one! Seriously, buy it! It offers the best price for the best features. I really loved the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class; however extending the Maybach sub brand to other ranges is still questionable. Existing SUVs are not offering up-to-date features and the comfort to match the promises of Maybach comfort and quality. Anyway, this G-Wagon will be a collectors’ item in future.

Performance? Mercedes-AMG V12 biturbo, which delivers a maximum output of 463 kW (630 hp) with a peak torque of 1000 Newton-metres!

Vision Mercedes Maybach 6

Mercedes-Benz’s success with the Maybach increased the motivation to introduce a sexy and a ground-breaking concept vehicle, the Vision Mercedes Maybach 6.

Mercedes-Benz decided to fight back against Rolls-Royce with this concept vehicle. Maybach is eating into some of the Rolls-Royce market share due to the Rolls-Royce ageing product range. The Maybach 6 is the answer. Mercedes-Benz can always do better in terms of high quantity.

The Mercedes-Maybach 6 is a pointlessly long vehicle (6-metres) with an electric propulsion system that can generates 750 HP, can accelerate to 100 km/h in under four-seconds and with a limited top speed of 250 km/h. That’s where the Mercedes-Benz always fails. They (try) to create a cool vehicle and limit the top speed to the 250 km/h to reduce the cost of manufacturing.

Why? Very simple. After 250km/h, the vehicle’s components will face very high levels of stress, therefore they would have to be design it in such a way as to overcome this stress. This leads to an increase in cost. That’s why a Porsche 911 is always more expensive! It can easily handle its top speed without falling apart.

I was expecting Mercedes-Benz to get rid of the limited top speed with this cool car!

The design of the car is a very subjective matter. I can’t love it or hate it. When I first saw it, it reminded me of wealthy people in the 1920s. Expensive tuxedos, hair with lots gel, talking about their “start-ups” (usually in the diamond business) and mostly hanging around Mayfair, London and Monte Carlo. When I read the Mercedes-Benz press release, I realised that it perfectly matched its target audience.

“Mercedes-Maybach stands for the ultimate in exclusivity and individuality. The target group is made up of status-oriented customers”

FYI, status-oriented means poser!

Regarding the technology behind this red car, it is clever! The electric propulsion system is capable of driving this 6-mt long vehicle up to 500 km! Also, in 10-minutes the batteries can be charged for 100 km more!

Overall, Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is a very lavish car with an exaggerated design approach that will not satisfy many people (including me). As the Maybach sub-brand has gained a very good competitive edge in terms of its competitors (Bentley and Rolls-Royce), Mercedes-Benz must introduce a car that captures the luxury coupe market by narrating the technological know-how of the brand.

The recipe is perfect. People love it and I am definitely sure many status-oriented people with their large wrist watches will order one. However, will the Über generation order one? Actually, that’s the question! Because, the millennial generation has a totally different approach to luxury products that are status-oriented, and their consumption patterns have started to hurt many luxury brand such as Tiffany & Co.

One Reason to Buy a Second Hand Maybach

There is only one reason to buy a second hand Maybach, it weighs more than 2.8-tonne. And most of the mobile cranes cannot lift it up. Basically, Maybach 62 or 62s is too heavy for an average tow vehicle’s crane. I did my best to find another reason to buy a second hand Maybach, but couldn’t find it.

Maybach is out of production since 2013. The existing Maybach is a model variation under Mercedes  S-Class besides AMG. To make things easy; here is the list of second hand Maybachs in UK (Autotrader).

Mercedes-Maybach S600 vs Rolls Royce Ghost II

Mercedes-Maybach S600 vs Rolls Royce Ghost II. Basically, Rolls Royce Ghost II is the main rival of the Maybach. Maybach once failed to compete with Rolls Royce and during that time, Maybach was trying to compete with Rolls Royce Phantom. Whilst Maybach was based on a very old S-Class!

Now Mercedes learned the mistakes and they used the Maybach as a product variation similar to AMG. And that was very cleaver decision. Now, Maybach is clearly based on the S-Class that resembles with Rolls Royce Ghost. Why? Because, Ghost is based on BMW 7-Series. Now the game is fair!

Mercedes-Maybach offers state-of-art technologies that are available with any S-Class. The main advantages of having Mercedes-Maybach is the latest pre-crash systems, Pre-Safe. Pre-Safe technologies can identify cross traffic, pedestrians, cyclists, rear-end collisions. In addition, Mercedes-Maybach offers reclining seats that are amazing. Honestly, that’s main reason why I loved Maybach. You can have a seat like a bed inside a car. However, Rolls Royce Ghost can adjust the softness of the suspension based on the seat are on!

Also, Rolls Royce Ghost II offers the coolest rear hinged doors! That cannot be ordered with a Mercedes-Maybach. Despite the coolest features of the Ghost II, it does have a drive shaft tunnel, which you can find with the Mercedes-Maybach as well.

Another advantage of the Mercedes-Maybach is being under the radar. Whichever Mercedes models you purchase, people perceive it as a Mercedes. Even if you have Mercedes-Maybach, people will say that’s a S-Class. However, when you purchase a Rolls-Royce, all eyes on you. Even if, the car is from second hand market with 100.000-km on dial. It doesn’t matter, you still have a Rolls-Royce and you are a mega rich. Mercedes-Maybach will be the most luxurious under the radar vehicle.

My personal preference is for the Mercedes-Maybach, because it offers better technology than the Ghost II. However, we may see new technologies with Rolls Royce Ghost II after the 7-Series facelift. Also, you don’t need to ask engineers at Rolls-Royce to have a reclining seats, Maybach offers them as a standard. Despite the advantages of the Maybach, it is still a Mercedes. It cannot provide you the experience and the exclusivity of a Rolls-Royce. And the unforgettable experience of owning of a Rolls-Royce!

Mercedes-Maybach S600 is Revealed!

Mercedes-Maybach S600 is revealed now. Even though, I am not a fan of S-Class’s design but I really liked the Mercedes-Maybach. The brand sounds a bit funny, Mercedes-Maybach but this is a result of the Mercedes’s branding strategy, Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach. Anyway, people will call it Maybach S600! And the branding issue will be resolved.
The new Maybach seems to offer better exterior and interior design than the previous Maybach. However, it is still is not as high as the Rolls Royce Phantom! Therefore, I may consider the Mercedes-Maybach as a true competitor of Bentleys and Rolls Royce Ghost.
Maybach will benefit from the Mercedes’s high-tech gadgets and also it will be the next under the radar car for rich people who don’t wish to create an impression of being rich! At the end of the day, it is a Mercedes (Most people will think like this).
Last note, Mercedes-Maybach does share the same interior design, however Maybach model offers more luxurious details than the standard model. Similar to standard more and Mercedes-AMG model.

Why Mercedes-Benz needs Aston Martin? | The Future of Aston Martin

Why Mercedes-Benz needs Aston Martin? I would like to keep this article short and simple. Mercedes-Benz has been trying to gather a market in ultra luxury segment for more than a decade, started with the reboot of the Maybach brand. Mercedes-Benz tried their best to create an ultra luxury brand with the Maybach but due to using same structure with the W220 S-Class and lack of adequate sophistication, Maybach could not keep with Rolls-Royce and Bentley.

What I mean by sophistication? Basically, Maybach never offered the same hand built car experience like Bentley or Rolls Royce. The amount of plastic used in interior and exterior were beyond the acceptable level. And the huge resemblance with the S-Class W220 completed the picture.

Now, Volkswagen Group owns Bentley and Bugatti. BMW owns Rolls Royce and Mini. And Mercedes-Benz or Daimler Group own literally nothing in ultra luxury market. There is no brand under the Daimler Group or Mercedes-Benz to compete with Bentley, Rolls Royce or Bugatti. And Mercedes-Benz knows that their product range is not capable of running at the same pace with the iconic hand built British automotive icons.

And there is one option is left! Buying the Aston Martin. This sounds too rough! And also hinders many potential problems. Instead of that Mercedes-Benz is going to develop the relationship through engine manufacturing and automotive technology sharing. Because, Aston Martin purchases the V8 and V12 engines from the Ford and Aston Martin doesn’t have enough money to develop sophisticated automotive technologies. On the other hand, Mercedes-Benz burns more than €1-billion to R&D and have a lot technologies that are years above their competitors. But it is still Mercedes-Benz.

Harmonising the technology of Mercedes-Benz with the soul of the Aston Martin will reveal a very strong competitor to Bentley and Rolls Royce.

This article represents my own personal views. It does not advice, consult, suggest or predict an investment suggestion, or business strategy to be used for an investment. I do not provide consultantcy or service for any type of investment or similar advices.

Vertu: Probably The Most Expensive Mobile Phone

Vertu is a luxury mobile phone owned by EQT VI and Nokia by ten percentage. If the year was 2004, you might be really excited to read this post. But time has changed, we all changed but Vertu stayed the same (I haven’t update the content, Vertu ownership may have changed).
Nokia introduced the Vertu to wrap up their Nokia device in a luxury way. All the Vertu phones are hand built, all pieces and parts are extremely high quality, you have a personal concierge button and Nokia S40 or Symbian operation system!
All these tricks used to be working before the iPhone and Andriod. However, modern world of forgot the Nokia! This is the ugly truth, it is very hard to find someone using Nokia nowadays. What about Vertu? The same! Vertu does not offer anything except the built quality and golden covered option. It is really sad to see this diminish of Vertu.
However, the Vertu phones do not seem to suffer from this situation. If you want to buy a Vertu phone with keyboard that works with Symbian operation system, where you will have a very limited app store, you need to pay £17,000. A gold covered Vertu phone with full size keyboard costs more than a car and unfortunately, offers nothing special except posing your wealth. And proof of your lack of knowledge on technology.

I don’t want to say this but Vertu is like Maybach. You understand what I mean.

By the way, no one can achieve the precise production quality of Apple.

End of Mercedes Maybach

Mercedes Maybach brand is officially dead. Yesterday on internet, a gossip spread all over the web sites; Mercedes decided to stop the production of Maybach and not to offer 2013 model. Everyone in automotive industry predicted this and waiting for this quite long time. Due to Maybach’s insufficient competitive power over Rolls Royce and Bentley, sales of Maybach dropped very badly.
Maybach did not have that Rolls Royce feeling of bespoke luxury and comfort or driving experience of Bentley. And Maybach was based on the chassis of previous Mercedes S-Class with outdated technology. So many things prepared this end.
On the other hand, Mercedes has not limits to boost the amount of luxury and comfort with the upcoming S-Class. I think, we are going to see a very different S-Class next year.

Maybach The End: Coming Soon!

The day has come, Maybach brand will be ceased again! I was expecting to hear this news for half a decade. Maybach lost its stamina when Rolls Royce revealed the new Phantom in 2003, it was very clear that Maybach was going to suffer. I knew that Maybach will struggle to keep up with Rolls Royce but, I never thought that, it would be this worse.

Maybach brand was ceased in 1945 and reborn in 2002 based on the concept vehicle, which was revealed in 1997. It was based on the previous generation S-Class; the chassis, electronic, instrument panels, some of the interior design. However, it was built in a perfect harmony, which hinders the bits from the old S-Class. And I had chance to see this in 2004 in Ankara, Turkey. It was one of the unique moments, which I will never ever forget. It was one of the most expensive cars for its era and it was standing in front me.

Unfortunately, Maybach never achieved to be exclusive like the Rolls Royce, Mercedes brand was more powerful than the Maybach, and it hindered its performance. Everyone associated the Maybach with Mercedes S-Class; they had too much in common. And in 2006, Mercedes revealed the new S-Class with more technology and quality which is quite close to Maybach. Then, the Maybach’s technologies became outdated! Its features, buttons, dot matrix screen was out of date! New S-Class offered more technology and similar comfort with lower price. And world economy crashed in 2008, Maybach lost its potential customers as well! Catastrophe did not stop, Rolls Royce extended the product range with more competitive vehicles, Bentley was selling 10,000 per year. Maybach was struggling to save it business!

The rumours started, Aston Martin will design the next generation and it will be built in UK! But, I never gave a chance to this project. Mercedes will sell a car that is manufactured by Aston Martin! It would be a shame for the brand, everyone knows that Mercedes has the highest technology for manufacturing. So, this project was cancelled last year.

And all the unfortunate incident made the Maybach brand closer to end! In 2007, I wrote a paper about the future of Maybach and shared with Mercedes. They respected my work but, did not say anything about the future. I predicted this end but I thought it would not happen.

However, the extremely slow sales figure and being outdated by Bentley, Rolls Royce, S-Class and its competitors made it closer to cease the brand. And last week, Daimler AG announced that Maybach will be ceased in early 2013. Their future strategy is to use Maybach brand as a luxury option for S-Class and other high-end models to offer more luxury. I think this is the best way to cease Maybach brand.

Lastly, why Maybach failed? If you want to know this answer, just look at a Rolls Royce and a Maybach. Rolls Royce as tall as a basketball player and offers a state-of-art way to get into vehicle with an excellent convenient way. And look at Maybach, you know lower your body to get inside a Maybach.

Rolls Royce is adapted for us, but Maybach asks us to adapt ourselves.
