The End of Porsche Cayenne! Long Live Cayenne Coupe

Porsche have revealed a new Cayenne which offers a greater degree of coupe style design experience: it is called the Cayenne Coupe. It is slightly sporty: there is a spoiler at the rear of the vehicle to increase stability at higher speeds; in addition, the drivetrain is relatively sportier than the Cayenne.

However, under the skin, it is merely an Audi Q8. Based on the MLBevo modular platform, the Cayenne Coupe is not, in fact, all that different to the normal Cayenne. It is just a little sportier and probably less off-road capable. When a vehicle is more off-road capable, it becomes less sporty and vice versa.

The reason for the introduction of the Cayenne Coupe is to help Porsche to compete with the sportier SUVs on the market such as the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, Maserati Levanta, BMW X6, Range Rover Sport and Audi Q8. Basically, the Cayenne Coupe is a posh version of the Q8!

After the original Cayenne Coupe, the new Cayenne will simply become a comfier version and in all probability will not be remembered as a sporty SUV. Why? Our brain loves to compare things based on reference points, and now the reference point of Cayenne sportiness is the Cayenne Coupe; as a result, the new Cayenne will be perceived as being a comfy version of the original.

Is it worth purchasing? At the end of the day, the Cayenne is not a 911. It is ideal for people who are obsessed with the level of space inside their car and who want to enjoy a sporty ride. I am sure the Cayenne Coupe will increase general Porsche sales and may also eat into some of the original Cayenne’s market. We will see how it goes!

Autosport International 2019 #asi19 // Porsche 935

Autosport International 2019’s Porsche stand was amazing as you would be expecting. The 911 GT3 RS and the Porsche 935 were there. The 935 is also known as ‘Mobydick’. The GT3 RS seems like it can be driven every single day but you need to sacrifice some comfort and luxury!

Autosport International 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS #asi18

I know it has been a long time since the Autosport International 2018; however, I kept the photos secret on purpose to give you a cool flashback.

Porsche revealed their hardcore monster, the 911 GT2 RS at the Autosport this year. Officially, this car managed to go around the Nürburgring in 6 min 47.3 sec! This figure will probably sound meaningless if you just drive the GT2 RS around town.

In case you haven’t realised, the 911 GT2 RS has 700 HP (3.8 lt turbo flat-six boxer engine) and sends all those horses to its rear wheels. Hopefully, the engine is on top of the rear wheels; you won’t have lots of wheel spin but you will have some!

The acceleration to 100 km/h is in 2.8 sec, thanks to the PDK. You can’t achieve this via manual gearbox. And the top speed is 340 km/h.

Inside, it is not the most comfortable Porsche you could ever experience. The GT2 RS is designed for the track; however, it is not as hardcore as the GT3, it does still have some daily driveability, and you have the air con, sat nav, Apple Car connectivity and so on.

However, it wouldn’t be the perfect car for doing a weekly shop at your local supermarket.

Despite this, deep inside you wish you had one and could drive all day :)

Porsche Introduces Blockchain to Cars

Your next Porsche will be a part of the blockchain technology. Unfortunately, although you won’t be able to buy a Porsche with your bitcoins, you will be able to benefit from the blockchain technology.

So what is blockchain? It is a decentralised protocol for data transactions between partners. However, the decentralised word is a bit questionable. According to Vice Magazine, in order to decentralise all payment transactions throughout the world, anyone who has a credit card should get a $10,000 HP Workstation to handle the 400-billion transaction per year. Basically, big banks and cloud companies will handle the blockchain for us.

The benefit of the blockchain? Every change is recorded in chronologically-arranged data blocks, making it transparent and tamper-proof. However, according to Vice Magazine and many people from the industry, nothing is 100% tamper-proof!

Literally, blockchain is theoretically decentralised but ultimately it will be the same as what we already have, but more secure and faster.

Who else is using the blockchain? At the moment, startup companies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Still, you can’t buy a Porsche with your digital money.

What has Porsche to do with the blockchain? They tested how to lock and unlock a vehicle via an app with the blockchain technology. This provided temporary access authorisation and new business models based on encrypted data logging. This could be developed further to improve autonomous driving functions.

Next? Your Porsche becomes part of the blockchain, making a direct offline connection possible – that is, without a diversion through a server. As Porsche says, how can you access something that is living in a connected world when you are not connected? IS THIS WHAT YOU MEAN? Basically, this is like swimming inside an empty swimming pool.

Good news, you can unlock and lock your car in 1.6-sec through the app, which is six times faster than before. And 1.6 times slower than just pressing the unlock button!

Another piece of good news is that all the activities of your vehicle can be documented. If you skipped having a service and still managed to get the service book stamped, you will be caught. If you modified your Porsche 911 using an Amazon purchase and destroy the engine, they will know it. These can and will be seen by the app.

Porsche will also offer access authorisation by the vehicle owner that can work remotely. Basically, you can be a selfish person and never share your car with the blockchain.

There is something cool about the blockchain. There will be faster, easier and safer authentication at the charging station for your car for any payment. Basically, you can pay to charge your car quicker than before. By the way, most universities in the UK let people charge their car for free.

As the blockchain system works with smart contracts, this means you will be part of the mining business. Smart contracts are automated contracts that are triggered by transactions based on a previously defined condition, and you need miners to confirm this agreement. What happens next? Miners make digital money! Actually, your car will be powered by the XAIN energy efficient mining system, and you will be part of the miner club. Basically, you will make digital money as well.

As the mining systems generate lots of heat, I guess your cooling system will be busy cooling down your XAIN mining system rather than your engine.

Overall, I am happy to see the blockchain technology being implemented by Porsche within the automotive industry. As the Porsche is a part of the VW Group, we will definitely see this technology in a VW Polo quite soon. Despite my fun approach to the blockchain, it is the future of connectivity. Of course, there are weaknesses and problems, but this always happens. Our existing TCP/IP based internet is not perfect, but it is part of our lives and we accept it. The blockchain will be like this in the near future.

To be honest, I don’t care whether or not your Porsche 911 will mine digital currency, but we will benefit in the future from the easy, fast and secure solutions provided by the blockchain.

More details can be found in Porsche’s official press release

Porsche 911 Carrera T

Porsche recently announced the twenty-first Porsche 911 model to the market. Yes, there are 21 different Porsche 911s that you can buy. You name it, they have it in their vehicle range.

The latest addition to the range is the Porsche 911 Carrera T. It is based on the 911 T from 1968, and Porsche has decided to revive it! As you would expect, the 911 T follows the heritage of being a lightweight Porsche. Basically, you will pay more for less car. You can even remove the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system – aka your navigation and stereo system – to save weight.

It has a 3-lt flat six twin turbo 370 engine with only a rear wheel drive option (with a mechanical rear limited slip differential). You can either have a manual or PDK gearbox. To save cost, you will have literally no comfort at all.

It is not a super-fast car actually. 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 sec with the PDK gearbox with a top speed of 290 km/h.

Overall, you are getting a unique Porsche 911 that is not really fast. However, if you wish to experience the emotional appeal of the 911 T model, this would be your car.

The New Porsche Cayenne 2017

Porsche has recently revealed the third generation of the Porsche Cayenne. To be honest, no-one can ignore the resemblance to the second and the third generation Cayenne. The new Cayenne looks exactly the same as the old one. Why? It is quite simple. Car companies don’t like to change the design of their best selling models and scare their customers.

That’s a really good approach when it comes to maintaining good financial results. However, it ruins the passion when it comes to car design.

Actually the drama of the exterior design is explained by the press release, the inclusion of the true Porsche 911 DNA. This means that all future Cayennes will look exactly the same as the Porsche 911!

Anyway, the new Cayenne is a game changer. Like a massive American SUV, the Cayenne features all-wheel steering. Now you can go in to a corner faster than ever with a 1.9-tonne SUV. However, the all-wheel steering not only improves the handling. It also makes parking easier.

American SUVs have been offering this for a very long time. In the early 2000s, this feature was unique to the Chevrolet Suburban and is now available with the Cayenne.

The Cayenne is in full turbo now! The Cayenne features a single turbo engine and the Cayenne S features a twin-turbo engine. This means, if you don’t save enough, your Cayenne can suffer a bit of turbo lag!

The ride comfort has improved a lot. It is called Porsche 4D with the three chamber air suspension being coupled with the PDCC system. The PDCC system uses a 48-volt system, so the car’s ECU can control the PDCC more accurately in order to improve the handling and increase the comfort.

48-volt is the new 12-volt.

Another interesting point about the new Cayenne is the weight reduction. Yes, they seriously reduced the weight of an SUV by 65-kg! Better than nothing. Bear in mind, that the Bugatti Chiron weighs 100-kg more than the Veyron!

The interior is a copy and paste from the Panamera, including a massive multi-gesture touch screen. To be honest, the Panamera offers a very good interior and I don’t mind seeing it inside the Cayenne. They all do this nowadays and it makes things cheaper.

The gearbox is still a conventional 8-speed automatic with a very short first gear to create a low-range gearbox effect. The off-road functionality is improved and, according to the press release, the new Cayenne locks all its differentials. I guess this will be achieved via the torque vectoring system inside the differentials. However, this is better than a fully open differential.

Now you can order your Cayenne with the Sport Chrono Pack which will allow it to accelerate faster. To be honest, do you really need this? Yes, if you are buying a Porsche.

The Cayenne also features a driving assistance system (Night Vision Assist with a thermal imaging camera is one of the most important assistance systems, along with Lane Change Assist, Lane Keeping Assist including traffic sign recognition, traffic jam assist, ParkAssist including Surround View and Porsche InnoDrive including adaptive cruise control). However, don’t expect an AI technology inherited from the Audi A8. The Cayenne will do its best to keep you safe.

Overall, the new Cayenne doesn’t offer a very different and distinctive exterior. However, it is probably the first Cayenne to inherit all the Porsche DNA. Unfortunately, inheriting the Porsche DNA means that it will always look the same. Last note, the Porsche Cayenne shares the same platform as the Audi Q7, the Bentley Bentayga and the future VW Touareg (but who really buys a Touareg?).

Tech Spec;
The Cayenne with a six-cylinder turbo engine and displacement of three litres delivers 250 kW (340 hp), developing a torque of 450 Nm. That means that even the standard model achieves outstanding driving performance: It accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds (5.9 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package). The maximum speed is 245 km/h. The second model to launch is the Cayenne S. It is driven by a 2.9-litre V6 engine with twin turbocharging. This engine, which has also been newly developed, delivers 324 kW (440 hp), achieving a torque of 550 Nm – 15 kW (20 hp) more than its predecessor. Accordingly, the vehicle accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds (with Sport Chrono Package: 4.9 seconds). The maximum speed is 265 km/h.

Porsche Cayenne Tows an Airbus A380

I know this sounds crazy but Porsche has finally made it. The ageing second generation Porsche Cayenne S Diesel and the Turbo S were given a massive test – towing an Airbus A380. The biggest passenger vehicle on the planet, which weighs more than 250-tonne (285-tonne)! You may remember something similar ten years ago when the Fifth Gear presenter, Tom Ford, decided to pull a Boeing 747 with a diesel VW Touareg V10. He made it but he cheated! The Boeing 747 had dummy engines and was probably lighter than a normal plane. In addition, that plane was parked on the Top Gear circuit for ages and wouldn’t have had any fuel or liquids. It was a dry 747 with fake engines.

However, Porsche did it properly! A plane that was ready to fly was towed by a Cayenne. This campaign was done to show the robustness and the power of the Cayenne. Towing a 285-tonne plane is not easy, and creates tremendous pressure on the torque converter, gearbox, drive train and the chassis (platform). And don’t forget, Cayenne doesn’t have a low range gearbox like the Touareg!

The first gear of the Cayenne is designed to act like a low-range gear. From this experience, we can see that it does work.

However, they should have done this test before to show that the Cayenne is still a powerful SUV for offroad work!

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo

Porsche recently revealed the perfect family car, the Panamera Sport Turismo. Despite its cool name, the Panamera Sport Turismo is an estate car. It is a car for families who wish to buy a Porsche. However, the Panamera wasn’t offering enough boot space and the Cayenne is a SUV paradigm. Despite the unattractive boot space of the Sport Turismo, it offers the latest technologies and the superb handling features of the Panamera.

Where did the Sport Turismo come from? Basically, there is a market for families who are looking for a sport estate car. Audi created this market with the RS6, and then Mercedes-Benz introduced the E-Class and CLS Estate offered an AMG, while BMW offered the M5 Touring. Only the Porsche was missed out with regard to the estate car trend. And finally we have it.

The Panamera Sport Turismo offers the same specs as the Panamera and the same engine variation. So, there is nothing really different. However, I really want to see it in real life.

Autosport International 2017 #asi17 Porsche

It was my seventh year at Autosport International in Birmingham. The Porsche stand was honoured by these four vehicles: the Cayman, Cayman GT4 Clubsport, 911 GT3 Cup (Type 991) and 911 GT3 R models. As the Porsche team told me, this is the right sequence for the Porsche’s racing levels. You start with a daily Porsche then move to a Cayman GT4 Clubsport with the driving assistance system to begin racing. Then, you shift to a 911 GT3 Cup for a more comprehensive racing experience and, finally, you end up with the 911 GT3 R for the real racing experience.

You can’t think about the Autosport International without the Formula 1 cars. Like previous years, Autosport exhibited last year’s F1 cars and the good old ones (aka retro)! However, this time, there was something really special: the Formula E car from the Jaguar Racing team.

This is the New Porsche Panamera

The second generation Porsche Panamera is here. The cash maker, the family car, the first generation four-door Porsche achieved more than 150,000 sales and the second generation is here to satisfy even more. Do I like the Panamera?  Yes.  It’s great that Porsche keeps manufacturing the 911. No, the Panamera is not a proper Porsche.

So what is new about the second generation Panamera? Rear-axle steering! When you steer in a particular direction, the rear wheel steering reduces your turning circle and improves the high speed handling. The hard keys on the dashboard are reduced and I hope that we won’t get lost inside the menus . In case you would like to enjoy a diesel Porsche, now you can order one with an all-wheel drive, the Porsche Panamera 4S Diesel. It will be a best seller and I loved it. However, I would never buy it!  The Panamera 4S Diesel is powered by a V8 diesel (422 HP, 850nm) with the top speed of 285 km/h and it reaches 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds (Sport Chrono Pack).

The other exciting update is the introduction of night vision with a thermal camera that shows humans or animals at night on the screen. The other exciting feature is the InnoDrive. This is a navigation system that adjust your adaptive cruise control’s speed based on the upcoming road terrain. A similar system is also available with the new BMWs. The headlights can be now ordered with LEDs.

Inside the new Panamera, unfortunately you won’t find the same number of gadgets and driving assistance systems that are available in the Mercedes S-Class.

It is a very good looking car, and you can’t argue that it is an improvement it terms of its interior quality and its driving characteristics. Would I buy over a Porsche 911? No! But I would prefer it over many other cars at this segment.
