Can I Buy a Car Online? Financial Times The Future of Car Summit 2023

The future of car dealers was a prominent topic discussed at the Financial Times’ Future of Car Summit this year (2023). As the car industry embraces a more digital customer experience approach, the role of dealers is evolving.

For a long time, the prevailing belief in the car industry was that no one would buy a car online, and I have written about this extensively. Car industry insiders had a valid point: buying a car is a significant and critical decision, and many consumers would hesitate to make such a purchase online.

However, just before the pandemic, Tesla began accepting deposits for their cars online. The pandemic then had a profound impact on online shopping, as it became the primary option for consumers in 2020. As people grew accustomed to buying everything online, the question arose: why not cars?

Car companies have started redesigning their websites to offer an online shopping experience. However, they have been cautious about implementing Apple Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal buttons for purchasing cars online. Perhaps the perception is that cars are still too expensive to be bought online.

To illustrate, let’s consider an extreme example from the high-end fashion brand Hermes. Hermes is a French luxury brand known for its exceptionally expensive products.

One of their most lavish offerings is a £101,110 Sofa Sellier 5-seater corner. Surprisingly, this sofa can be purchased online using Apple Pay or a credit card.

While this example may be at the extreme end of the spectrum, there are customers who are willing to make such online purchases. If a sofa can be bought through Apple Pay, why not a car? After all, one can visualise the size, appearance, and features of a car more easily than an unfamiliar sofa.

Considering this perspective, it may be worth exploring the incorporation of Apple Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal in the car industry to gauge consumer reactions.

What is Special About The Apple Watch Hermes Edition?

During the Apple Event a few days ago, they unleashed a special edition of the Apple Watch, which won’t be welcomed by Apple geeks, and some fashionistas may be horrified by it. It is Apple Watch Hermès, and it will probably be the first and last orange coloured box offered by Apple.

So, what is special about the Hermès edition of Apple Watch? Does it change anything concerning your Apple Watch experience, or does it offer something else? Why we are bothered with this over-priced Apple Watch?

First, Hermès is one of the oldest luxury fashion brands from France. It was founded in 1837 and six generations of commitment to exquisite quality of production and unique design philosophy have positioned Hermès into a unique place in the fashion world. Hermès leather manufacturing process has not changed much since the company began, and this is a total contradiction with Apple.

Apple is innovative, and Hermès is traditional!

However, they can benefit from each other. Apple is becoming a luxury tech brand, and without adequate heritage, it is challenging to establish a new brand against well-established luxury fashion brands. Apple needs the traction from Hermès or others.

On the other hand, Hermès wants to capture the digital market space of fashion, but they are too traditional. Moreover, they need a brand that can pump digital fuel into their system without developing new and out-dated gadgets. And that’s Apple! Essentially, the Apple Watch Hermès edition is the beginning of Apple and luxury fashion brand collaboration.

The Hermès edition price is starting from $1100 (I was expecting $11000), and this makes it cheap compared to the Gold edition. Also, it is a bit more expensive than the standard models. This ensures that the Hermès edition is not super expensive or pointless. More precisely, this edition turns the Apple Watch edition into a really cool fashion item.

Personally, I would not buy the Apple Watch edition, as the Hermès edition is available! Why? Hermès is a unique brand and their leather craftsmanship is well respected. Apple makes great high-tech products; the combination of these two different approaches makes the Hermès edition the best Apple Watch edition.

It won’t be a poser item. Because it is really hard to identify the Hermès edition unlike the Gold edition. So, if you were thinking that the Apple Watch is too muscular, the Hermès edition will change your perception! Any women reading this article and planning to buy an Apple Watch should go for the Hermès. That would be great investment to add to your Chanel bag.

Hermes LEGO Birkin Bag: The Most Affordable Hermes

The Hermes LEGO Birkin bag is crafted from Lego, drawing inspiration from the original Hermes Birkin bag. Original LEGO bricks are employed in its creation, making the Hermes LEGO Birkin a luxurious and nerdy masterpiece. Surprisingly, many might assume that such a unique bag would have a limited market appeal.

Contrary to expectations, Hermes has introduced the LEGO Birkin bag at a surprisingly reasonable price point. Reports suggest it will be priced at £89! At this price, it’s an unprecedented opportunity to own a piece of Hermes luxury that many people might not want to miss, regardless of their affinity for LEGO or nerdy items.

The LEGO Birkin emerges as the most affordable Hermes bag ever offered. This could potentially revolutionize the perception of luxury bags, making it a common sight in daily life—perhaps even surpassing the ubiquity of a Louis Vuitton bag. While some might initially hesitate due to the bag’s nerdy undertones, the attractive price is likely to outweigh any reservations. The impact of this innovative offering on the fashion scene is bound to be noteworthy.

Porsche don’t enter to hand bag business!

Porsche 911, the perfection of automotive engineering and one of the best cars money can buy. Actually I should add this also, the most expensive way to get crazy! Porsche 911 is always one of the most expensive car on market, regardless of taxation or import duties, it is not a cheap car to buy anywhere on earth.
Like every German car, Porsche is charging for every kind of extra. Clear stop lamps extra, spoiler lip painted extra (I don’t know what that is!), painted model designation extra! This list goes forever. I do understand these painting thing for some big parts. But charging for “Painted headlamp cleaning system cover”, what the hell is this? I could not even find a proper picture to show this ultra extra small thing. In every car, including Kia, this is something standard. Especially when you pay more than €100000 to 911 Turbo.
Porsche ask for around €150 for painting this ridiculous part. Of course not finished; if you wish to clear your rear window whenever you wish, you have to pay €250 for rear wiper. Yes, rear wiper which is something standard in Dacia and is optional in Porsche!
I do know that, they want to make more money from every bit. And they studied their lesson from very well written economics books. But Porsche is selling 911s to very rich people and very rich people do not wish to pay extra for painted headlamp cleaning system cover! Because, they worked and saved so much to avoid these details.
Actually I understand Porsche very well, everything in Porsche is too serious. Really, that’s a too serious car company. From manufacturing to marketing, every single details is planned, programmed. Hopefully they are making 911s very well! And a result of this mechanic marketing approach to dynamic world, ends up with charging everything.
Let’s consider a similar luxury product to understand this thing more easily. Hermes bag, unisex model. You will probably pay for €3000 and hopefully everything is included to price. If Hermes decides to charge extra for name label €75 and for zipper €150 and painted zipper for €50, what would happen! Imagine a Porsche director decides to buy a Hermes bag (I know they won’t buy when they could have Porsche Design bag as free!) and Hermes opens a catalogue of optional extras which suppose to be standard, probably this person will freak out and leave the store. Because, she/he is expecting everything for that huge price tag!
Porsche, you are charging too much for a car and charging more for senseless details. Unfortunately nobody pays attention to rear wiper or coloured cleaning system cover. And Jeremy Clarkson is making fun of this bit on TV! I think Porsche should engage emotional senses adaption department to company. By this way, they could avoid funny detail from their lists!
