Vision Mercedes Maybach 6

Mercedes-Benz’s success with the Maybach increased the motivation to introduce a sexy and a ground-breaking concept vehicle, the Vision Mercedes Maybach 6.

Mercedes-Benz decided to fight back against Rolls-Royce with this concept vehicle. Maybach is eating into some of the Rolls-Royce market share due to the Rolls-Royce ageing product range. The Maybach 6 is the answer. Mercedes-Benz can always do better in terms of high quantity.

The Mercedes-Maybach 6 is a pointlessly long vehicle (6-metres) with an electric propulsion system that can generates 750 HP, can accelerate to 100 km/h in under four-seconds and with a limited top speed of 250 km/h. That’s where the Mercedes-Benz always fails. They (try) to create a cool vehicle and limit the top speed to the 250 km/h to reduce the cost of manufacturing.

Why? Very simple. After 250km/h, the vehicle’s components will face very high levels of stress, therefore they would have to be design it in such a way as to overcome this stress. This leads to an increase in cost. That’s why a Porsche 911 is always more expensive! It can easily handle its top speed without falling apart.

I was expecting Mercedes-Benz to get rid of the limited top speed with this cool car!

The design of the car is a very subjective matter. I can’t love it or hate it. When I first saw it, it reminded me of wealthy people in the 1920s. Expensive tuxedos, hair with lots gel, talking about their “start-ups” (usually in the diamond business) and mostly hanging around Mayfair, London and Monte Carlo. When I read the Mercedes-Benz press release, I realised that it perfectly matched its target audience.

“Mercedes-Maybach stands for the ultimate in exclusivity and individuality. The target group is made up of status-oriented customers”

FYI, status-oriented means poser!

Regarding the technology behind this red car, it is clever! The electric propulsion system is capable of driving this 6-mt long vehicle up to 500 km! Also, in 10-minutes the batteries can be charged for 100 km more!

Overall, Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is a very lavish car with an exaggerated design approach that will not satisfy many people (including me). As the Maybach sub-brand has gained a very good competitive edge in terms of its competitors (Bentley and Rolls-Royce), Mercedes-Benz must introduce a car that captures the luxury coupe market by narrating the technological know-how of the brand.

The recipe is perfect. People love it and I am definitely sure many status-oriented people with their large wrist watches will order one. However, will the Über generation order one? Actually, that’s the question! Because, the millennial generation has a totally different approach to luxury products that are status-oriented, and their consumption patterns have started to hurt many luxury brand such as Tiffany & Co.

An Unimog for The Rails

The Unimog U423 for the rails, probably the only cool vehicle from the Mercedes-Benz stable. Unlike its passenger vehicles and SUVs, the Unimog is not designed to impress people. Rather, it is designed to do the job that is promoted for which it is designed . As you can understand from my words, I am not a fan of the G-Wagon anymore and of the rest of the Mercedes-Benz SUV range. However, Mercedes-Benz trucks and heavy duty vehicles are my favourites. They are built to do their job until they are due to come out of service.

Recently, Mercedes-Benz announced a new version of the Unimog designed for the rail network. Usually, Unimogs are used on rail tracks involving a special system. You would probably see them in many places around the Europe. However, those Unimogs were not designed for rail transport, they were adapted to the rails!

This time, Mercedes-Benz has created a Unimog that is capable of towing 1000-tonnes of wagons, powered by a 5.1-lt four-cylinder diesel engine with 900 nm of torque. Probably you will be saying ‘Oh my Range Rover has more power than a Unimog’. However, heavy duty engines are designed to work under heavy workloads and at low RPMs. The amount of torque from this engine at the idle can be more than your peak torque! The top speed of this Unimog on the rails is 50 km/h. It also features a braking system for the wagons.

The traction is applied to the rails by conventional rubber tyres and designed to be used on various rail gauges.

If you are still thinking your SUV is cool, you haven’t seen this vehicle yet!

Mercedes-Benz Urban Electric Truck (e Truck)

A truck to be loved. I have always loved trucks more than cars. Trucks are made for work, not for impressing others. They are on the street for a reason! And the sheer amount of power from their diesel engines has always impressed. If you ask me if I wanted to own a brand new Mercedes-Benz truck, I wouldn’t say no. Actually, I would like to own the latest Mercedes-Benz Urban Electric Truck (e Truck). It is designed for urban transportation.

Urban transportation unfortunately pollutes the environment more than the #dieselgate. This is due to the stop-and-go traffic and the loading and unloading over short distances which increases fuel consumption and pollution. In addition, urban transportation distances are not that very long and a diesel engine is not very efficient in such a situation.

Thus, Mercedes-Benz created the electric urban truck to tackle the problem of pollution and fuel consumption. The range of this truck is 200 km which is more than enough for urban transportation (except if you live in Istanbul). The battery sits under and around the metal chassis frame. There are lots of spaces for placing batteries on a truck chassis.

The gigantic torque level of an electric motor can easily overcome any high weight load problems. Shifting to the electric motor from the diesel engine will not have any side effects for urban transportation. Electric motors are as powerful as diesel engines, and a 200-km range is more than enough for most urban transportation. The rest of the truck is the same as a Mercedes-Benz truck. In addition, many companies can benefit from the free or reduced-fee electric charging points!

Really excited to see these trucks on the street!

Some facts;

  • The operating costs were 64 percent lower on average.
  • Permissible gross vehicle weight of the Urban e Truck 26 tonnes.
  • The costs of batteries to lower by the factor 2.5 between 1997 and 2025 – from 500 Euro/kWh down to 200 Euro/kWh. At the same time, performance will improve by the same factor over the same period – from 80 Wh/kg up to 200 Wh/kg

The New Mercedes-Benz E-Class W213

The new Mercedes E-Class. It has been more than three years since I wrote about the Mercedes Benz UK. Recently, I came across the new E-Class, the all-time innovative and all-time conservative Mercedes-Benz. I always both liked and disliked the E-Class, and with my recent experience things have changed a bit.

Earlier I mentioned on my blog the pre-crash, semi-autonomous and driving assistance systems of the new E-Class. With my latest experience, I had the chance to see these technologies in real life, and to enjoy the massive screens on the dashboard.

I loved the screens on the dash. They are very clean and clear. The PPI rate is way way better than the Land Rover and Jaguar. Also, the E-Class may have overtaken the new BMW 7-Series in this area. However, the menu structure of the E-Class resembles that of the new 7-Series. I consider this to be beneficial for the driver. It will make it easier to control and use the infotainment systems on different brands. However, it is still more complicated than the IOS.

The comfort level of the new E-class is improved and now it is the smallest sized S-Class. However with the recent technological features, the E-Class has overtaken the S-Class! These features include semi-autonomous overtaking, pre-safe internal ear. The upcoming facelift of the S-class will embed all these technologies.

Despite my all efforts to find a problem inside the vehicle, everything was perfectly put together. Mercedes is literally at the same level as the Audi in terms of interior production quality.

The E-class is still practical, still good to drive, still looks conservative. However, with the latest driving assistance systems, it is way better. Also, the latest 2-lt diesel engines will increase the market share of the E-class in markets with a higher tariff for the larger engines. The only missing engine is a 1.6-lt diesel, and I am definitely sure that it will be released soon.

Unfortunately, the E-class will not be able to capture the 5-series’s core customer range. You can still feel the conservativeness of the E-class when you enter the car. However, this is Mercedes-Benz, whose cars will always have a focus on comfort.

In case you are planning to buy one to get the all pre-safe features, the semi-autonomous driving up to 130km/h, the massive infotainment system, the airmatic feature which improves the ride significantly, you may ignore to order the sound system. The base system will be more than enough. You will not regret it.

A Minor Facelift to the Mercedes-Benz G350d Professional

The ultimate car for the celebrities, designed to be driven on the high quality roads of Hollywood and the Mayfair, London. However, the reality is the G-Wagon you usually spot in the streets of posh areas is not the pure G-Wagon. Mercedes-Benz still sells the real G-Wagon, which is called G350d Professional. It is designed for off-road and bought by the people who really wish to do off-road. Therefore, G350d was offering not a very tempting interior and a poor exterior design. Recently, Mercedes-Benz decided to change the faith of the Professional and revised the exterior and the interior.

My suggestion, the existing interior parts are not longer manufactured and Mercedes had to do this. Thanks to this revision, G350d pro now offers a better interior comfort with a cooler exterior. Despite this revision, you will never ever spot a G350d professional on the Keeping Up with Kardashains. Prof is still a utility vehicle, not a vehicle to show off.

In case you wish to buy a proper G-wagon, go for the professional, it the real one.

The New Mercedes-Benz E43 AMG 4MATIC

Mercedes-Benz just revealed the new E43 AMG 4MATIC. I know, we were expecting to see the E63 AMG instead of the 43. However, Mercedes-Benz decided to offer under powered AMGs to the market. Such as Audi S6! Probably, they are planning to capture a new market! Here is the details from the press release.

“Hot on the heels of the world premiere for the new Mercedes‑Benz E-Class, its first high-performance variant is on the way from Mercedes-AMG. The E 43 4MATIC with the 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine on board will represent the most powerful variant of the executive saloon when it is introduced in September 2016. With two new turbochargers and corresponding software applications, the supercharged six-cylinder engine delivers an output of 295 kW (401 hp). As ever, the standard-specification AMG Performance 4MATIC four-wheel drive combines optimum traction with high agility on the E 43, thanks to rear-biased torque distribution with a front-to-rear ratio of 31:69 percent. The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission with shorter shift times, the retuned sports suspension based on the AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension and the more direct steering ratio also provide for signature AMG Driving Performance.”

Technical details are;

“Engine, V6 biturbo, 2996 cc. Output is 295 kW (401 hp) at 6100 rpm. Peak torque is 520 Nm at 2500-5000 rpm. Fuel consumption, combined 8.3 l/100 km. And CO2 emissions, combined 189 g/km. Kerb weight 1765 kg. The acceleration to 0-100 km/h is 4.6 s. The top speed is limited to the250 km/h.”

Mercedes-Benz C 43 AMG 4MATIC Coupe

Mercedes-Benz just revealed its C43 AMG 4MATIC Coupe prior to the Geneva Motor Show. I am not a fan of AMG cars but Mercedes-Benz developed a car that has captured my attention. Why? It is a 4MATIC coupe and an AMG. Usually, AMG cars are rear-wheel drive and struggle to transfer power from the engine to the rear-wheels! However, 4MATIC enables the engine to transfer power to all four wheels and avoid any traction loss! This means one thing, very rapid acceleration and handling inside the corners!

Wait a second what happened to the C63 AMG? C 43 is a rival of the BMW M235i and Audi S3? Note: The last C43 was released in the year 2000!

Here are some of the highlights!

  • 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine with modified engine control unit, increased boost pressure and far higher dynamics and high-revving
  • 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission with double-declutching function when shifting down and exhilaratingly short response times in “Sport Plus” mode
  • AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive with rear-biased torque distribution of 31 to 69 percent (front axle to rear axle)
  • AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with adaptive variable damping in three stages, mode can be selected via button, adopted from Mercedes‑AMG C 63
  • AMG DYNAMIC SELECT switch for dynamic, individually selectable driving experience with five drive modes and AMG-specific parameterisation
  • Three-stage Electronic Stability Program ESP®
  • Front axle with newly developed steering knuckles and load-bearing joints on the spring link.
  • Elastokinematic adjustments to the links have been adopted from the Mercedes-AMG C 63
  • Rear axle with elastokinematics tailored to higher driving dynamics
  • Large braking system with internally ventilated compound brake discs, perforated at the front with a diameter of 360 mm, and with a diameter of 320 mm at the rear
  • AMG styling with distinctive front and rear apron as well as special exhaust tailpipes
  • Diamond radiator grille with chrome-plated pins and louvre in high-gloss black
  • 18″ AMG light-alloy wheels in 5-spoke design, painted high-gloss black with a high-sheen finish
  • AMG instrument cluster with chequered flag design with 280 km/h scale and AMG main menu
  • Multifunction sports steering wheel in leather with deep embossing in grip area, flattened bottom section, with red contrasting topstitching

New Mercedes-Benz E-Class W213 Photos and Driving Assistance Systems

New Mercedes-Benz E-Class W213 photos were leaked today. And I am not surprised with the new design. It is still conservative E-Class and a bit stuck between the S-Class and the C-Class. However the interior is amazing.

Here is the list of the things the new and boring looking Mercedes-Benz E-Class can do it by itself. I copied pasted them from the Mercedes-Benz website, so you can read the all details of the new driving assistance systems.

DRIVE PILOT

This system represents Mercedes-Benz’s next step along the road to autonomous driving. As Distance Pilot DISTRONIC on motorways and country roads, it is not only able to keep the car the correct distance behind vehicles in front automatically, it can also follow them at a speed of up to 210 km/h for the first time. This can make life easier for the driver, who no longer needs to operate the brake or accelerator pedal during normal driving and also receives plenty of steering assistance from the Steering Pilot – even on moderate bends. Another unique feature at speeds up to 130 km/h is the fact that, like in a swarm, the system can continue to intervene actively by taking account of surrounding vehicles and parallel structures, even if the lines are unclear or non-existent, like at road works. The system therefore makes driving much easier, especially in traffic jams or heavy congestion. Another feature that helps to relieve the workload on the driver in such situations is the extended restart function, which allows automatic starting of the vehicle within 30 seconds following a stop initiated by the Distance Pilot DISTRONIC on motorways or similar roads.

Further new development designed to relieve stress: in combination with COMAND Online, the selectable Speed Limit Pilot subfunction can autonomously adjust the vehicle’s speed in response to camera-detected speed limits or speed limits logged in the navigation system, e.g. 50 km/h in built-up areas or 100 km/h on country roads. Additional DRIVE PILOT innovations include, for the first time, an Active Lane-change Assistant. This radar- and camera-based assistance system assists the driver when changing lanes on multi-lane roads and can steer the vehicle into the lane selected by the driver – when overtaking, for example. Once the driver has indicated to turn for at least two seconds, the Active Lane-change Assistant assists with steering into the adjacent lane if it detects that the lane is unoccupied.

Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function

Compared with the standard version, this system has extended speed thresholds with respect to vehicles and pedestrians. Furthermore, it can detect crossing traffic at junctions and, if the driver fails to respond, apply the brakes autonomously. For the first time, it can also detect hazardous situations at the tail end of traffic jams where there is no room to manoeuvre and initiate autonomous braking far sooner in such situations. Consequently, it is possible to completely avoid accidents at speeds up to 100 km/h or substantially reduce the severity of accidents at speeds above this level.

Evasive Steering Assist

This likewise new system ideally complements the pedestrian detection function of Active Brake Assist. When the driver deliberately or instinctively performs an evasive manoeuvre in a dangerous situation, this function can assist by adding precisely calculated steering torque to support the movement of the steering wheel. This helps the driver to avoid the pedestrian in a controlled manner while subsequently facilitating the straightening-up of the vehicle to allow the situation to be negotiated safely.

Advanced assistance systems

The intelligent assistance systems in the new Driver Assistance package also include proven systems that have been further developed in terms of their mode of operation and the sensors they use. Active Lane Keeping Assist can help stop the driver from unintentionally changing lane, this being done by corrective one-sided application of the brakes, including in the case of broken lines and risk of collision, e.g. with oncoming traffic or fast overtaking vehicles. Active Blind Spot Assist can now also warn of the risk of a lateral collision in typical urban traffic at low speeds and, as before, correctively intervene at the last moment to prevent a collision at speeds above 30 km/h. PRE-SAFE® PLUS can protect against collisions with traffic following behind and their effects on the occupants.

Remote Parking Pilot

For this first time, this system allows the vehicle to be moved into and out of garages and parking spaces remotely using a smartphone app, enabling the occupants to get into and out of the car easily, even if space is very tight.

Car-to-X communication

In 2013, Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to introduce widespread car-to-car networking in the form of a retrofit solution. This is now to be followed by the logical next step as the world’s first fully integral Car-to-X solution goes into series production. The mobile phone-supported exchange of information with other vehicles further ahead on the road, for example, can effectively allow the driver to “see around corners” or “through obstacles” well in advance.

This means that the driver receives an earlier warning than previously in the event of imminent danger, such as a broken down vehicle at the edge of the road or also in the event of heavy rain or black ice on the road ahead. In this case the new E-Class simultaneously acts as a receiver and a transmitter, since warning messages are conveyed automatically by evaluating vehicle statuses or manually by the driver to the backend.

PRE-SAFE® impulse side

This system is part of the Driving Assistance package PLUS. If a lateral collision has been detected and is imminent, it moves the driver or front passenger away from the danger zone in a sideways direction by way of precaution. To do this, the system inflates an air chamber in the side bolster of the front seat backrest nearest the side of the imminent impact in a fraction of a second, thus increasing the distance between occupant and door and, at the same time, reducing the forces acting on the occupants.

PRE-SAFE® Sound

This system is based on a human reflex in the inner ear, called the stapedius reflex. PRE-SAFE® Sound emits a short interference signal through the vehicle’s sound system if the risk of a collision is detected. This signal can trigger the natural reflex and thus prepare the occupants’ ears for the expected sound of the accident.

High-resolution MULTIBEAM LED headlamps

Each with 84 individually controlled high-performance LEDs, automatically illuminate the road with a hitherto unsurpassed, precision-controlled distribution of exceptionally bright light – without dazzling other road users. That’s because this grid allows the light distribution of the left and right headlamps to be controlled separately and adapted to the changing situation on the road quickly and dynamically. All functions of the Intelligent Light System in low-beam and high-beam mode can furthermore be depicted purely digitally and without mechanical actuators for the first time, including, as a world first, a purely electronically implemented active light function.

Digital Vehicle Key

This drive authorisation system uses Near Field Communication technology and allows the driver’s smartphone to be used as a vehicle key.

Automatic lane change

When the driver activates the turn indicator for more than two seconds to change lanes, Active Lane Change Assist steers the new E-Class into the adjacent lane. The vehicle will only change lanes automatically if the sensors do not detect any vehicles in the relevant safety zone. It is inconsequential whether the car wants to change to the left lane for overtaking or wants to return to the right-hand lane. A long-range radar system and the stereo camera monitor the area in front of the vehicle, while multi-mode radar sensors permanently check the area to the rear and sides.

Both factor-in the speed of detected vehicles in the vicinity. The driver themselves need only monitor the lane change. For Germany, the Federal Motor Vehicle and Transport Authority has already issued provisional approval for Active Lane Change Assist. The application procedure for EU-wide approval has been started.

The criteria for the operation of Active Lane Change Assist are:

  • operation of the turn indicator for longer than two seconds
  • the unoccupied zone detection system allows a lane change within three seconds
  • Steering Pilot is activated
  • vehicle travelling on multi-lane, motorway-like roads, detected via the navigation module integrated into COMAND Online
  • separate adjacent lane, detected via stereo camera
  • speed between 80 and 180 km/h
  • The active lane change is aborted by the system when the sensor system detects an obstacle, no longer sees lane markings, the driver countersteers or Steering Pilot is switched off.

One Reason to Buy a Second Hand Maybach

There is only one reason to buy a second hand Maybach, it weighs more than 2.8-tonne. And most of the mobile cranes cannot lift it up. Basically, Maybach 62 or 62s is too heavy for an average tow vehicle’s crane. I did my best to find another reason to buy a second hand Maybach, but couldn’t find it.

Maybach is out of production since 2013. The existing Maybach is a model variation under Mercedes  S-Class besides AMG. To make things easy; here is the list of second hand Maybachs in UK (Autotrader).

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG at Scrap Yard

I will keep it short this time! In US, a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG owner decided to get rid of the car. Personally, I never liked the SLS AMG, so I don’t feel bad or sorry (But many you does, I know). However, this does not change the catastrophe of  crushing a SLS AMG in a scrap yard. There is no clear explanation why the car ended up at scrap yard.
